I guess I'll preface this post with my wife works at a bank. Being that she is a bank employee, during the holiday season she calls me almost daily to come and buy "something" that a customer has brought in. The something can range from full rolls of wheat cents to large size notes. Today she called and said come up she had some "cool" things for me. So I ran to the bank and she had 3 1934 A $100 notes, $260 face of mint rolled State Quarters and 2 BEP straps of sequential 2003 $1 star notes. The 1934A $100 notes were still in their hard plastic sleeves. The conflict comes because I'm happy I got some decent items for face value, but on the other hand someone had to sell something they probably loved to buy a gift for their family. When photobucket stops acting up i'll post some pictures.

Nice ... did you pick them all up?
For me I would have to decide if I needed them .. or if I thought I could sell them for a profit ...
unless I was sitting on some extra money .. and just wanted to add them to the pile ....

They could have been sent to the shredder. You saved them.

Maybe, maybe not. There is no one in my family with any interest in coins or currency. So the nieces and nephew, who will probably end up dealing with all our stuff some day, will probably make a minimal effort to sell what they can and dump the rest. They may cherish our wedding rings or photo album, but I doubt that they will develop an interest in coins.

Just had a thought: those BEP straps might have some fancy serial numbers....hope so!

Quote: Nice ... did you pick them all up? Yeah I grabbed it all. I always try and keep a small stash of "just in case" money on hand for emergencies like this. Quote: For me I would have to decide if I needed them .. or if I thought I could sell them for a profit ... The quarters were flipped before I left the bank parking lot. State Quarters are not my thing. but I know a few dealers who sell them like wildfire. The $100 notes I'll probably keep the best and trade/sell the other two for a small profit. The straps I may keep one and flip one. I should be able to come out even with cash invested and keep a couple pieces for my troubles. Quote: Just had a thought: those BEP straps might have some fancy serial numbers....hope so! Unfortunately no fancy serial numbers. beggars can't be choosers though.

1. May have been from a home robbery 2. May have been from a coin shop robbery 3. May have been from a family that lost someone and this is what was left and no one knew what to do with it. 4. Might have been from someone just getting rid of STUFF So many possibilities of how these things end up at a bank.

Sounds like she's a keeper. Don't forget that we do have a lot of knowledge about monetary items and put a different value than face value on it because of it. For a lot of people, cash is just money. See also topics on what people find in Coinstars, for example. I wouldn't be surprised if the person delivering the three 1934 notes was relieved to find out they were still valid as legal tender.

If they turned up at a bank, whoever had them had no clue what they had, at least wrt those bills. Bet there's a story there.
