I am sure there are some CCF members that have a lot of old Redbooks. Just curious what some are picking up. Certain years ... all years? Had some come in today, I am thinking of picking up 14 different years for my coin library. Not sure what a good price is .... any opinions?

There is a price guide in the back of my 2006 that lists Red Book values. I have about 20 that I got at garage sales over the years. I did buy a new one from 1962 on the bay a few years ago. John1

I am pretty sure just carl collects them. I only have a few myself. 1981, 1985, 1993, and 2000 in the original hardback. 2007, 2009, 2013, and 2015 in spiral bound.

I enjoy going back through them and seeing the history of how the hobby has changed. So although I don;t officially collect them, I do have quite a number of older ones. One is a 1948 (although I don;t know where that one is!), the next is 1959, then a run through most of the 60s, a run of 70s, and a few from the 80s. After that are a couple here and there. Since slabbing has killed the concept of individual coins being worth individual amounts unless they are key dates or "slab worthy," aka - all is junk silver unless a key, the Red Book just has no real purpose to me anymore. Its a good publication, and the histories in it are good, but its not worth my investing money into when I already have the histories from previous issues. And, admittedly, I have always thought it strange to have a pricing book that never was close to actual prices. But the inflated values listed always served for a good comparison as to what was harder to find and what was not. I also liked the grading system they published with every coin type. Its how I learned to grade years ago.

I always keep an eye out for them at garage sales myself. Usually can pick them up for a dollar or less each. Gotten some nice looking older ones that way. I'm gonna have to remember where I put them.

I've got too many books now! I just unloaded 19 of them for $10.00 on ebay a few months ago. I did keep my 1982 copy autographed by Q. David Bowers, Bill Fivaz, JT Stanton, Ken Bressett, Don Kagin, Rick Snow, and others. Too sentimental to let that one go. I've keep the most recent one on hand, as it's the quickest reference to use for looking up a quick fact on anything US coinage related. Since I collect numismatic books, I have the "The Official Red Book: A Guide Book of The Official Red Book of United States coins" by Frank J Colletti, a must for collectors of the RedBook series.

GR58, it looks like your trying to catch up with me. I have all of them from the first one to present. Also, the 1947 remake that Whitman published not long ago. All are the hard covered ones and most never opened. Each year I get two ringed versions for use and a hard covered one for the bookcase. Probably all end up at a Goodwill store someday.

I have a 1959, a 1964, and probably another 8 from 1970-2005ish
I think I have a pre-1959 one but not certain on that.
I pick them up as they are neat for the collection, but nothing I'd ever consider seriously collecting or anything, like getting ones in tip top shape, etc. If I can get them for free, or under $3, I'll buy em.
