Took a gamble on the bay with this one. Looks shinier than the crystal ball at times square. Has probably been cleaned, but was wondering if it was a Chinese fake made earlier this year. I don't mind if it was cleaned because the coin is so sharp. Would mind if it was fake. Assessments of grade would be appreciated if you think it is genuine. Will reveal the listing and what I paid later, but those of you savvy on the bay will probably be able to locate the coin. Thanks in advance.

I agree that the fabric does look off. The coin also looks polished to within an inch of its life. Notice how the details are clearly AU, but there is no trace of luster present.

I'm leaning towards genuine and severely cleaned.

Just looked it up on ebay. You paid at least $40 too much. Plus you do not have a return policy.

For your own protection, please stick to sellers who have a return policy, especially since you are still learning. Much less risk involved, and it is easy to fix a mistake.

Sorry to see this, I am. Looks like a costly lesson, it does. Judging from this seller's offerings, he may be a flea market guy who either knows nothing much about coins, maybe a scammer and/or is selling stuff for a third party. Just my thoughts ...

Assuming you paid already, maybe seller will cancel the order. You can request a cancel within 24 hrs, otherwise you have to message seller to cancel.

Posted this onto the ebay counterfeit forum but was moved to Classic coin discussion. I asked that duplicate thread to be deleted to concentrate discussion here.

Looked at some fake Seated dollars on the LSCC site and here on CCF. The LSCC ones are contemporary fakes which this does not seem to be. The modern counterfeits have obvious design features that are wrong or have raised features on the surfaces, inconsistent with mint struck coins.

Coin week has an article from earlier this year on a 1883 Seated Liberty half dollar, but looks nothing like this coin.

What is odd is why would a fake try to emulate such a common date coin? Not much of a premium here for this date/mt. The Seated dollars are much more expensive than the halves, so I would think that would be more likely to be targeted. NGC article on counterfeit Seated dollars:

Some of my coins look shiny like this one when a 100w halogen shines directly on it. Would be helpful to learn more details about what stands out to you that makes you believe it is fake.

Please look at the position of the eagle's eye in relation to the start of the beak opening on the OP coin and a genuine example. The difference would give me concern that the OP coin is a counterfeit.

Thanks for pointing this out Slider. At this point, in 1877, were all obverse philly dies uniform such that you wouldn't expect any die varieties within the year? Since I don't collect seated, or any other coinage by date, I am unfamiliar with die varieties.
