Oh my god. That will command BIG bucks GR. Looks like a delamination. If it was a steikethrough it would have needed to be soft enough to let the design form in places. A liquid like grease is incompressable so no design would form. PS, there is a 2016 ASE obverse die that had a massive displaced die crack from the date going up to liberty's chest. I've seen a few of those. This is massive and major and will bring hundreds of dollars. Looks like 2016 is a year for some nice silver eagle errors! I hope you scooped it up!

Your replies are making me feel better about this error ... I was thinking strike through or lamination, but was not sure. This came right out of a mint roll. We did check the silver ...999 fine. And the weight is 1.005oz. Same as the other ASE's in the roll. Because of the correct weight I was thinking it would not be a lamination error. But I am not a expert on these errors.

GR58, you are correct in your assesment that a lamination peel would have reduced the weight. I'm thinking its a struck through. Unless your planning on keeping it for yourself, it would have to be certified i'd imagine in order to get top dollar.

Since you can see part of the design through the struck-through it must have been something soft. It seems like there's been a bit of an uptick lately in struck through errors coming out of the mint. For some reason these seem to make it through the quality control procedures that catch most other types of major errors.

Wow. Struck through bubble gum? It looks like whatever it was is struck into the coin. XRF analysis! What's hard enough to cause the crater and turns purple under extreme pressure?
