For 1578, I have two 1 solidus pieces from the Free City of Riga, with the two being of different varieties.

The normal date (1578):

How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go?-Fourth-Edition!-Ended-At-1461-Waiting-On-1460-C.-E.-A.-H.-864

The upside-down date (158L):

How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go?-Fourth-Edition!-Ended-At-1461-Waiting-On-1460-C.-E.-A.-H.-864

The upside-down date is the less common of the two, but I managed to buy mine for pretty cheap (the seller did not mention the date being the wrong way).

Here is a 16 Sols from Maastrict (Belgium) dated 1579 AD. I have it attributed as VGN 154. When this coin was made, I believe that the city was under siege by Alex Farnese, the Duke of Parma.

nice coin, Spence

In those days Maastricht was part of the Duchy of Brabant, Spanish Netherlands, and the first city reconquered by Farnese from the protestant rebels. It became, however part of the province of Dutch Limburg, The Netherlands after 1830 when Belgium and The Netherlands were split again.

Thanks for the clarification @1c5d7n5m and I must say that there are some real beauts among the coins posted today for 1578 AD! Here is my own contribution--a 2 Kreuzer from the German Countship of Pfalz Simmern.

Nice thaler!

Gdansk (Danzig) 1 grosz siege money 1577. It seems the 1570s were full of this kind of strife.
In 1576 there was a succession crisis for the Polish throne, and the Polish parliament elected Stefan Batory (my 1581 coin). The nobility and bishop of Gdansk, however, had nominated the Holy Roman Emperor, Maximilian II, and refused to acknowledge Batory, who promptly laid siege to the cit for 6 months in 1577. Eventually a compromise was reached in which the city retained certain rights, while recognizing Batory's sovereignity and paying damages.

I am putting together a date set of these Free City of Riga coins, so here are close-ups of the top left piece and the bottom right piece (the two that are in my date set).

The regular date (1577):

How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go?-Fourth-Edition!-Ended-At-1461-Waiting-On-1460-C.-E.-A.-H.-864

The upside-down date (15LL):

How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go?-Fourth-Edition!-Ended-At-1461-Waiting-On-1460-C.-E.-A.-H.-864

Both types are quite easy to find, and in the picture with seven, two coins have an upside-down date. From my experience, 1577 is the most common date of this type.

1577 United Provinces of the Netherlands
a quarter Statendaalder (8 stuiver) Maastricht Delm. 128 very rare

the Spanish Fury in Antwerp (november 1576) triggered the second Dutch revolt and the Pacification of Ghent 1577
monetary union was proposed with a new type of coin, the Statendaalder (minted between 1577 and 1579)
PACE ET IUSTITIA, peace and justice is characteristic

the quarter daalders are quite rare in all provinces
half daalders are more common than whole daalders
