I moved your thread. It sounds interesting. Can you post pictures of the coin?

Why do you think it doesn't have an "S" mintmark?
Looks to me like there is one right behind his shoulder right where it is supposed to be.

rbrown, here is the PCGS coinfacts page on the 1971 S nickel: http://www.PCGScoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/4203 As you can see, the mint mark is on the obverse to the right of Jefferson's bust, and below the date. Perhaps you are confusing mint mark placement with that of War Nickels (1942-1945) on the reverse of the coin above Monticello?

Your photo has some glare on it which makes it difficult to say for sure. But it definitely appears that there is a mint mark on the obverse right were it's supposed to be, as westernsky said. Turn the coin so that Jefferson is vertical then look around 4:30 near the rim. and to CCF!

I was confused to where. I thought it would be on the back like the War Nickel. Sorry, did not mean to be a pain to anyone.

Thank you for your encouragement. I have a lot of misc coins that were left after I sold all the valuable coins. Now I need college funds so I am searching what is left.

As posted .. it is always best to ask questions ... if you don't know the answer. For Jefferson nickels the mint mark could be in one of three different locations. Depending on the year. In most cases if there is not a mint mark it is a nickel made ar San Francisco. There are exception, like a 1971 proof that is missing the mint mark ... or for example a 1944 Henning, missing the mint mark, but is a counterfeit coin. Learning about coins can take many years ... decades
