The grade looks like AU 55 Dets, Questionable color.

Its really a shame that one got cleaned because it was awfully nice otherwise.

S1, double die obverse, nice variety ( one of the top 10 for the series), I agree with AU55, but I think the color is OK. Raymo, you always come up with some interesting coins

and possibly even AU53. Some interesting information I found in Rick Snow's Flying Eagle & Indian Head cent Attribution Guide VOL. 2 applies in this case IMO; Quote: The coins for 1887 are more available than either 1886 or 1888 dates. This is easily explained due to the higher mintage. Like the 1886 and 1888 issues, the coins naturally come a bit paler gold than other years. This is likely due to the planchets coming from Joseph Wharton, some of which may have been made from redeemed and melted older cents. Regardless of the actual metal source, the alloys differ slightly on some of the coins these three years. Of course, this does not excuse the high grade examples that have been chemically altered to simulate full red coins. The practice was so prevalent in the 1960 - 1990 period that you would have had a 9 in 10 chance of buying a coin with enhanced color in a typical coin advertisement offering "BU" coins. Once the original skin of a coin is stripped, it will quickly react with its environment, acquiring toning, fingerprints and spots. Third party certification helps, but should not be relied upon as total protection. Education is the only way to protect yourself. Thankfully, with greater collector access to information through quality color images on the internet, it is harder for coin processors to succeed. Had almost forgot that this was one of the worst years that IHC's got doctored until I looked it up to be sure I was remembering correctly.

I like the color, pretty attractive. I'm not seeing any wear, MS63.

I'm at au58 I see just the slightest hint of wear on top of headdress and a nice DDO variety as noted. Maybe cleaned along ago but has retoned to market acceptable.

I love this coin... ...she's gorgeous, even more so in hand. I've wanted a nice S1 for a long time, ever since MikeyNJ beat me out on one awhile back. I think she's a 55-58 at least and like Alphaomega said probably an old cleaning that has retoned nicely. Thanks everyone !

AU-55, scarce S-1 "Doubled America" variety, unappealing coloring at least to me. Nice find, though!

Do you think you will send it in for grading? I have a PCGS AU55 and yours is way nicer. I still think this will get into an MS holder.

No, I'm not in to slabs. I put it in a 2x2 and labeled it.
