Stopped by the LCS and He has a few tubes of silver half dollars for $110.00 USD,or $6.00 per choice.They look like a very interesting group of coins.Would this be a good deal,or is He too high,just about right?What would be a good/average price on these?

Melt value of 80% silver halves is $5.20 US. I would buy them at $6

My LCS right now is BUYING silver at $6.40 per .50 cent coin... So you're getting a GREAT price!

Buy as many as you can as per your choice. Are the coins in the tubes well-worn? If they are, they will not weigh out like a new one.

1919 and prior halfs are sterling so if he lets you paw through them, grab as many of those as you can. And make sure the rest are 1967 and prior. I love Canadian 50's.

Thanks for the info. The only dates I could see down through the counter top was a 1964,and a 1962.One tube/roll is marked '64.They looked to be,I'm guessing,AU,too maybe MS.I didn't look That close,but they did look in nice shape for what I saw of 'em. I'll have to go back and take a little closer look now.  Quote:

if you get to look through there may be some pre- 1953 which would be KGVI these hold a small premium you may find these in the mix as well, look for 1948 this is a low mintage year as well.

Yes, very droll Devlec, but in my defense I have found quite a few Edwards and teen KGVs sorting through junk bins (certainly well worn though).
I'll take that jab as a welcome.

Modern halves have fairly low mintages, however they aren't issued for circulation. Among my favourite series to collect!

There are a ton of interesting varieties in the 50 cent pieces.. the 44's,..46's..47's ..49's..quickly come to mind,...and of course the 48's are also a keeper at all times.. If you can find a Standard Charlton cataloge from 2006 or 2014, there is extensive 50 cent coverage in the back explaining most of the varieties to be found out there. These used or new books can be found with standard books company searches..ex..Abe's books.. Happy hunting..!! |

In Canada, most LCS including mine will sell bulk silver halves for melt value. That is all I would pay. But they may be harder to find in the US.
The modern ones, 1953-66 or so, were used very little in circulation and consequently are often found in high grades.
