As you can see from the photos, this set is in trouble. I am going to crack it open, but once I do, what is your recommendations for the coins? Acetone bath?....and if so, then what? I think the Lincoln may be beyond saving, however the Jefferson has some nice toning under the black top layer. The Kennedy has only a small spot on the rim, just beginning to spread to the field. It probably sounds like a lot of work, but I will probably see it again sometime, and would like to see what is under the black on the Jefferson. I can already see the "spend it's" coming, but.....

Yes, spend the cent for sure, it is beyond hope.

That said, there is not much market for proof coins toned or damaged due to water contact.

It is not readily apparent if the dime and quarter are damaged.

Some of these coins might make good candidates for discovering new "conservation" methods.
Rest in Peace

Holy cow , did you accidently drop that set in your fish tank ? That proof Lincoln should win some kind of award for being the most disgusting proof ever .
anyway ,I don't think Acetone would help any of those coins.
The Nickel and Half are not that shabby ,somewhat nice .
Your call ,I'm up in the air .

If it was me I would throw the cent away, spend the remaining coins and purchase a new proof set.

I agree, but imho, the cent and nickel are gone, the rust spots on both is why I say that... I dont know if acetone will save the rest... Id say vinegar... Which is a very light acid

There is no saving them.

You have .91 cents toward a better condition proof set.

This is a very good example of how important proper storage is.

Well, a quick look at ebay sold items for 1984 proof set reveals that for about $3-4 above the water damaged 91¢ you have now will get you a new 1984 proof set postage included.

That's pretty bad.
Have you owned this set since it was new or how did you acquire it?

I just received it from auction. I guess buyer beware with online auctions with the cover closed. It made the trip from Virginia to Montana....maybe someone dropped it in the Mississippi on the way, although it looks more like salt water. Truthfully, I have no idea where it has been for the last 23 years. I appreciate everyone's input...Thanks

I guess there is a reason they only show the box when selling them.

The cent is hoepless, you can try acetone on the others but I don't think it will help. At that point you have nothing to lose trying dipping them. It may save the quarter and dime, doubtful on the nickel and half dollar.

I say spend the half, cent, and nickel, and dip the other two in acetone. A 1984 proof set is really not that expensive to replace.

For the penny, maybe a light scrub with some toothpaste and 0000 steel wool.

No dont do anything with steel wool. The goal would be to improve it and that would only scratch it up.

I would contact the ebay seller and ask about his return policy.

I have never left a negative in my life but if this was not resolve to my satisfaction, I would.

This is unacceptable. Surely, the seller knew.

What was the name of the ebay seller so I know who not to buy from?
