Does it bother you that they paid these prices for damaged examples or does it bother you that you didn't win them? Just saying :)

I'm not sure that the full-vines are virtually unknown .. they were in the 2011 Charlton and have been discussed many times on different forum since 2011.

Notice that for the harshly-cleaned example there were only three bidders over $160. So, there aren't exactly legions of people willing to pay a big price. I believe there are very few people collecting 1858s by die. Of course, all it takes is two serious bidders...

okiecoiner...it's not the fact that's its a full vine that makes it a sleeper...
it's the fact that its a full vine + 15 stems vs full vine + 16 stems...

All of the full vines were put in the 2011 Charlton in the variety section in the back and why the 15 stem is worth twice as much as a full-vine 16 stem (which are scarce in themselves)

If you scroll down the listing you will see that she sends her husband to the post office twice a day. I kind of feel bad for the husband. At least he gets the weekend off

There multiple dies where the re-engraved part of the stem to #9 sort of fades away and two that were not re-engraved at all. Only one of these has a full vine and a #9 stem that was not re-engraved. Either through misunderstanding, or intentionally trying to scam, I frequently see ebay listings flogging the pretenders as the real RA4 die. The real one is very, very scarce.

I sent her an email and gave her a little primer about 1858's & 9's. What on earth was she talking about the stem at 9 ... hers was fully there. I explained to her about "full vine" and what it means. I also told her that, after looking at a number of her listing that had incorrect info, I had to send her an email and let her know that she has been off-base a lot.

I agree with Jim. There are only a few people collecting 1858 cents by die variety. Given the price differences between 1858 and 1859 cents, I think it was always going to be the case that many more people would collect 1859's by die variety. That being said, because they are in Charlton, I think the two types of full vine 1858's (16 stems and 15 stems) have caught on a bit with collectors.

Books and published articles are like 'Field of Dreams' Rob... if you write about them, people will collect them...

Quote: What on earth was she talking about the stem at 9 ... hers was fully there. Nice try Okie..as I've sent her many many corrections in the past..She politely says "Thank you very much" and then goes right back to her rare and amazing errored cents..and never bats an eye... A complete waste of time ..IMHO.. I've seen one correct variety listed by her (an 1859 DP 9 #1) and "every other one wrong"..over and over again. ..and she lists tons of vicky cents over and over.. and almost all are vanillas but super rare in her mind and all errors..and finally ...always overpriced..
