Just for reference, the first "coin" is Canadian and weighs 100 kilos. The Australian "coin" is a tonne = 1000 kilos.
And both are at least .9999 pure gold. The Canadian example is .99999 pure if it matters on that scale.
Rolling that Australian piece down a hallway reminds me of the Indiana Jones boulder scene. Heads up!

Do you think that a grading company would "slab" either of those monsters?
Calling 1000 Kg of gold is really silly. Why not just stamp a 400 oz gold bar, declare it a coin and sell it at a hefty premium?

The 1-tonne gold coin was made as a gimmick, purely to beat the Canadians and break their record for "largest gold coin". They only made one (cast and sculpted, not struck, of course), carted it about for a bit as a showpiece and then promptly melted it down again and sold the gold off in more manageable chunks.

I think the Yaps might argue the point still.

That's strange...so by some odd coincidence, it was stolen just a few hours before I posted that... I promise I had nothing to do with it! I guess they should have made it a little heavier.

If I am not mistaken, the RCM actually minted several of those coins because after they unveiled it at the Olympics in Vancouver, there were many enquiries to purchase them.
