Why would there be issues with the site? It can handle and snails pace of orders just fine.

Quote: but I don't think this coin will sell well..i think that it is over all unattractive. the star crown looks like a kindergarten craft project and the eagle with downward wings both make this a flop for me. It will not sell well because gold is too expensive. However, I will certainly be buying this in silver; and it looks like I may be actually getting four of them.

I'm interested in the silver versions as well. The design is growing on me. Not sure about the floating stars but, eh.

Quote: I'm really not liking that cheesy star crown she's wearing. Quote: The star crown looks like a kindergarten craft project. Quote: Not sure about the floating stars but, eh. I believe I am the only person who actually likes LOVES those BIG stars. This release has been advertised to the hilt, and no one has expressed a fondness for the stars on the countless FB posts (Coin World, Coin Week, US Mint, etc.) relating to it. The entire design is beautiful. It's a very handsome design in gold, but those silver versions. . . . . I'm in love with that reverse proof. I'm with you, jbuck. I'm getting all four. In fact, my plan is to get two of the 4-coin sets. Looking forward to this one.

I like women of color. Actually I like many women, so many women so little time. Anyways, I do like women of color and have no problem on seeing them on a coin but the problem I have is thats not a very attractive looking female.
Her hair, which is braiding, just doesn't come out well in this coin either, which I think is probably the worst part of this coin. It just doesn't look good, at all. It makes it look like she does her braids with sailing rope.
I mean, can you imagine Blac Chyna with hair like this? Or for the older generation here, Vanessa Williams? No.
I feel the US Mint could have done a much better job of representing a women of color, even with braids, than this.

yup7676 makes a good point..actually, at the beginning of America's coinage didn't they give lady liberty flowing hair to represent freedom and there was outrage as it wasn't ladylike or something to that effect? why now on the anniversary would you keep the hair done up like that? why not commemorate the beginning of the mint's history with flowing hair like in their early days?
i think having her hair down would be more attractive, and would have a whole lot of symbolism not only of the first depictions of lady liberty on coins but also of the freedom it represented.
Feel free to call me Will.

I have read that the model for our beloved Saint Gaudens double eagle was black. That coin is truly an awesome work of art. Compare the majesty of that coin to this. This looks like a coin created by committee, as do many mint "products." I find myself looking at world coinage more and more, and it is too bad because I would rather spend my dollars here.

How many women of color do you know with long, flowing hair? IMO, whatever symbolism is associated with flowing hair and freedom doesn't necessarily apply anymore. Today, flowing hair may just as well mean "shampoo with conditioner". This design may not speak "freedom" like 18th century Caucasian women, but it does speak grace, beauty and dignity to me. I love it, stars and all.

I bust out laughing reading Alpha's comment and not because I disagree with him. I mean, I personally do know many women of color with long flowing hair (I get around ) but you are right, its not like every single women of color has it (its a long story and depending on who you talk too, some have told me its not worth the hassle others like to do it but its a lot of work for that hair type) so I mean it would have been nice if they did her with flowing hair. OR what about Michelle Obama? Her various hair styles would have looked great on this coin. I guess my objection is the braiding. I am not a fan of braids on women of color but it is a culture expression. So I can understand why on this coin she has braids but on this coin, the braids just, I dunno, again it looks like sailing rope. If they had done like flowing braids, with detail, I think we get a nice coin, tho I realize many folks do like this coin as it is. Now you guys got me started on the stars. What is up with that?

I like the coin ok in gold. More in silver.
I find the woman attractive-- nice neck, collarbone and overall features.
Like everyone else, I find the stars just too big and do not like them at all.
I always love eagles in flight, so I like the reverse. I wish it was not so busy. The silver coin in the picture with less writing on the reverse-- now that is a nice reverse.
My big issue is the markup to $1640. This thing has a mintage of 100,000.
The Rwanda Gold Lunar Rooster came out with a mark up to about $1700...but heck, it had a mintage of 100.
I know, this is a proof, not bullion. Still.
As much as I like it, I just don't do proof very often (probably because of these mark ups).

Now that you mention it, there are plenty of women of color with flowing hair. The braids just seem more culturally representational to me.
I do see the rope-like quality (again, now that you mention it) -- maybe it will look different in-hand. I still like it though.

Her hair is in "Corn Rows..." Not "braids." Her hair looks as it should. The stars are another story. Quote: The braids just seem more culturally representational to me. The question is what culture? IMHO Liberty should be inclusive of all and a representation of all not one group. St. Gaudens model for Liberty was African American, look it up...

Quote: The question is what culture? IMHO Liberty should be inclusive of all and a representation of all not one group. Well, the coin is supposed to depict an African-American likeness. And while I won't disagree that Liberty should be inclusive of all, this series is designed to be more specific in its cultural representations. In the absence of actual color on the coin (and thank goodness for that!), they had to do something.
