CoinWorld - The U.S. Mint issued the following update at 10:09 a.m. ET April 5 concerning sales of the 2017 Congratulations set: "Sales attrition from cancellations, returns and credit card declinations could result in a very limited quantity being made available for sale."The U.S. Mint April 4 ended sales of the limited-edition 2017 Congratulations set within two minutes of its becoming available, triggering a backlash from disgruntled collectors shut out from obtaining one of the 75,000 sets. The sets went on sale at noon Eastern Time without any household ordering restrictions. Sufficient orders were placed almost immediately to exhaust the maximum mintage, according to the Mint, which, as of late afternoon April 4, had not yet declared the set a "sellout." Mint officials have not disclosed whether they would reopen sales should sets become available because of returns, customer cancellations or cancellations by the Mint because of expired credit cards. I wonder if this is the fastest mint sellout of all time?

Whether it is the fastest sellout or not, it's a ridiculous situation. With no HH limit, why not sell them directly to the big guys, like they do bullion? If the rumors are true about a single order of 25k, someone must have whipped out the AMEX Centurion to front $1.4M.
My guess is it's either a gross oversight or a shrewd way to boost sales of the LESPS.

They won't have any problems selling the LESPS this year. Still don't know if both ASEs will be offered in the product. Roughly either $140 or $200 is a lot of money for people who only want the S - ASE. The big boys already have theirs, so the LESPS will not sell nearly as quick, but I assume it will still go at a fairly quick rate.

If the total mintage turns out to be 125k, the 2011-P reverse proof and 2011-S Unc are the closest in mintage as they both had mintages of 99,882. They're both $200 coins. Once things settle out (again assuming a 125k mintage which may not be right), my guess is that the 2017-S proof will be in the $125 to $150 range. Current price on ebay is in the $125 range. Depending on the price of the 2017 LESPS, it may not be worth it for some people.

I'm going to need the silver coins in the LESPS for my albums anyway so I will try for that set on release day.

Yeah, if you skip the Silver Proof Set, that's $55 or so. The Congratulations set was $55. If the 2017 LESPS stays the same price as the 2016, that's $140. So, if you take this route you're paying an extra 30-35 bucks, roughly.
Not sure if I'd rather pay that $35 to the mint or to a flipper. Tough call.

But the 2017 Congratulations Sets are selling for about $125 on ebay. That plus $55 for the Silver Proof Set makes $180. If the 2017 LESPS sells for $140, then you'd be saving $40 by buying from the mint. Of course the LESPS does not include the proof cent, nickel and small dollar, so take their value away from the $40 to give you your ultimate savings.

LESPS could possibly have both proof ASEs this year with a price close to $200.
