My new proof ASE showed up with a black thread sealed in the capsule. The coin itself is fantastic.

I suspect I should return it. Anyone done this want to give advice? Just use the preprinted label on the receipt, check replace on the form, and use USPS insured?

I answered my own question - the mint site has an "initiate a return" button that sends you a preprinted shipping label.

If there's nothing else wrong with the coin, you can open up the capsule and carefully remove the thread by gently blowing it out with a puff of dry air. The two halves are not welded together.

A few years ago I got a coin from the mint that had a small black spider sealed inside the capsule with the coin. After that having a thread would not bother me much.

I would just open the capsule and take out the thread and that would be that...

Interesting - I had used as much force as I was comfortable with on the capsule without it opening, so I thought it was welded. Next time, I will use more force.

Thanks, Celtic Knot, Foxwoods Man, and Old Ephriam.

Yep, they open up but sometimes require a little elbow grease. I've used the blade of an Xacto knife before to start a little crack between the halves of the capsule on the tougher ones. Then I just use my thumbnails to finish (carefully) separating, working my way around the capsule.

You know, for the next time.

I would just open it and remove the thread if it is a nice proof rather than go through the hassle of a return.

My replacement has shown up, and it too is a very nice coin. Next time, I shall open the case, but for now, I am satisfied.

Glad to hear it has a happy ending. Did it cost you any money to process the exchange?

I am pleased too. It did not cost me anything - the preprinted label from the mint site included postage.

Good deal. That's the way it should be.
