Just noticed it, and it wasn't there six months ago. Noticed a bulge in the 2x2 where it hadn't been stapled properly. Could this be the culprit? Will acetone help? Not an amazing coin, but still, I'd like to save it if I can.

Not verdigris, I'm pretty sure that only happens on copper. This is silver, meaning that it's tarnishing. Tarnish occurs when silver is exposed to high-sulfur air.

Doesn't look green or gummy? Looks like silver has tarnished, oh, sorry Dollar man, toned if you insist! Acetone sure won't hurt, may get any organic substancesvoff that is causing that. But tarnish, requires chemical removal, not the best. RoyCoinBoy, does that mean no more passing gas in Rockfish's abode?

Crazyb0 Ok, this isn't green tarnish on the high points. It is PVC residue on the coin and is harmful..You say it wasn't there when you put it in the holder? Please post a pic of the holder so we can see if it is the culprit. Acetone should be your weapon of choice to get rid of the PVC

Looks like PVC goo. Probably easily removed at this stage. Acetone, verdicare or WD40 should do the trick. See the many other strings for procedures......

My first thought was verdigris given the colour and the 20%Cu content. Hopefully just PVC goo, but it wasn't there 6 months ago and has always been in a mylar 2x2 since it's been in my posession which was probably 5 years ago. I'll give it the acetone treatment and see if that works. Wish me luck. At least it's not an Arnprior. thanks

I had a coin with just about the same stage and color of whatever that is myself. I was so relieved it just swept away with one very light swipe of a Q tip with it submerged in acetone for less than a couple minutes. Distilled water rinse and cool hair dryer blow dry. Into a safe holder it went.

No, all my dollars are kept in a vintage ATCO metal storage box like this one http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Vintage-ATCO...AOSwvihY~pvy and in 2x2 mylar flips. Box is always closed when I'm not browsing my coins. It's is the recent appearance of the green stuff that has me stumped. Hopefully, like NickelGuy's it will come off. It has some nice blue toning on the obverse so I hope I can save it.

It should come off and the coin will be fine.
Make sure that the storage flips are of the best quality and do your best to keep the humidity as low as possible. Ideally, you don't really want any contact with the higher elements on the coins surface with any of the clear plastic flip.
Humidity can damage most coins in time.

Well, a 24 hour acetone soak did the trick, though some of the spots required some attention with a q-tip. Very pleased with how it turned out with no damage to the coin. thoughts on grade?
