Today I received a 1943 silver War Nickel in change at the local hardware store. That got me thinking about what modern coin would be the hardest to get back in change, a silver quarter, War Nickel, Wheat penny, silver dime, etc.

It seems to me that of the major modern coins silver quarters are extremely hard to come by. The silver nickel may have it beat though.. tough call.
Lately it's been IMPOSSIBLE to find silver in any boxes of halves (for me), but nobody gives halves in change.

Any date Ike? j/k. Don't know about anyone else, but I don't think I could even intentionally find a silver quarter digging through rolls, let alone be given one in change. Anyone who gets one in change, as someone posted that they did a couple weeks back, is one lucky mofo. Grats on that War Nickel! I get happy just getting back a copper penny in change. I'd jump for joy for a 1943 nickel!

I think the hardest coin to pull from circulation would be the Large Cent.....just kidding !.... If by "circulation" you're counting the "roll searchers" I'd agree with st3rling...the Ike just isn't seen and it isn't in rolls...you'd have to "ask" a teller... and that's about it!......or if by "circulation" you mean by "pocket change" at a Wendy's or a grocery store or something......then I'd say the Kennedy '64 90% silver half is a pretty tough one to "pull"......cause it sure is hard to pull from "rolls" out of the Fed Res !

I'd say you have to NOT count Ikes or JFKs, because they don't widely circulate-you have to explicitly ask for them at the bank. In all the roll searching of pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters I've done over the years, these are the modern coins (1900-present) that I think are most difficult (in no particular order). I know there are some CCF members who have found some of these but they are very very uncommon/rare: Jefferson nickel key dates (38D, 38S, 39D, 39S, 50D- only have found the 50D) Jefferson nickel silver issues (I have found some of these and think these may be the easiest in this list to find) Washington silver pre 1965 (found just one) 1970S Small date Lincoln Cent (never found one) Mercury dimes (Never found one) FDR silver dimes (I've found just a few) Buffalo nickels (I've found just a few among thousands and thousands of rolls searched) Pre-1940 wheat cents (only found a few) Indian cents (found just one, 1907 VG) Any Barber coinage, and Standing Liberty quarters (never found any) Liberty nickels (never found any)

I have never found a single 2-3-20 cent piece from circulation. I keep looking though!

I'd have to say a 90% quarter. I occasionally (less and less) get War Nickels, wheats, and 90% dimes. We could argue forever if we got into dates, mint marks, varieties, etc... Left out halves and dollars too.

Regarding only the likelihood of receiving a coin worth more than face value based on metal content alone in common commercial transactions, I'd say a silver quarter is just about non-existant. I've received silver dimes and nickels, but if there are any more quarters out there, I've yet to see one in the past 20 years.

If you add the following constraint
"currently circulating modern coin" and exclude the outdated compositions such as silver
Then I think that the 1950D nickel would have it.

That's interesting XOG- how do you get a large cent from circulation- was it mixed in with a roll of quarters or halves?
