So I cannot afford to buy coins every month, months may pass before I can buy a coin and usually it's a cheap coin, but I want to know how do you guys get by without buying coins those in the same boat as me? I get myself busy with other things but it stays with me, I would take out my other coins and just look at them, or my Morgan pocket piece would remain in my hands flipping it all the time, the struggle is real CCF certainly helps with the withdrawal symptoms of not buying

I used to work with a few fellows, and after lunch break we would compare pocket change. In short order we were able to find Grease Filled Dies, lamination issues, off center strikes and Machine Doubling. Even a few silver dimes, war nickles and foreign silver. One time I got a planchet in change, and another guy had a severely under weight coin. No extra costs and a fun education.

I agree. A lot of interesting things show up if you inspect pocket change on regular basis. I'm inspecting euro coins for three years now and found some really cool errors along the way.
Otherwise I read a lot, or update my documentation when not able to buy coins and feel the need to do something with the coins.

Another option, albeit not as cheap, is coin roll hunting. You do get money back for the coins you don't keep, and those you do are for face value.

I buy a coin for cheap, then sell it for more. Then buy another one, and sell it for more. And so on and so forth.
I started doing this a couple years ago. I make several hundred dollars a month to put toward my collection now, up from maybe $30 a month.

Quote: Another option, albeit not as cheap, is coin roll hunting Currently my coin budget is $0.00. But, I do find interesting coins in rolls. I'm one coin away from a full Jefferson set after finding a 1950-D late last year. Errors and varieties are plentiful if you go through enough coins! Face-value coin collecting is cheap in terms of expense, but expensive in terms of time.

I totally understand what your going through . Sometimes I'll reread old coin magazines or go through my recent Red Book . But what works the most is being on CCF everyday, learning , commenting and giving my honest opinion on grading of most members coins posted .

I am with Typecoin, I am blessed to have an LCS that sells foreign silver (even in BU condition) for spot price. I buy and sell every week to supply my coin hobby.

I do understand not having enough disposable budget to support this hobby - or any hobby. I also do not regularly buy specific coins. I have been coin roll hunting for a few years.
I have accumulated quit a lot of variety coins. When I cannot afford to invest in new coins - I get a lot of satisfaction- going through coins that I have found - and stored- but not attributed. I have MANY hours - ahead of me - just trying to identify and match my previously found coins - to know - identified coins.

Quote: CCF certainly helps with the withdrawal symptoms of not buying That is exactly the case for me. I have spents lots of time taking a second, more educated look through my own coins as a result of spending time on CCF.

Coin roll hunting and searching through change kept me busy back in the day, but being on CCF has really helped fill the void the last few years.
As for my being on a modest budget, I survive by collecting lower cost modern issues and low-mid grade classics (for the type set).

While I am fortunate enough to have coin money now, when my daughters were both young and took up most of our income, I went five years (1986-1991) without being able to afford any coins. I spent time looking at the few coins I had in my collection, pulling coins from circulation, reading issues of Coin World from the local library and hoping for the day when I could afford something new!
