So, I found this nickel and I am trying to figure out if it's an error. As you can see in the picture, down at the bottom of Thomas Jefferson, the metal is off, risen that it looks off compared to how nickels are suppose to look. I am looking at all my other nickels a and I don't see the error. What do you guys think? I can get another pic with this nickel and another to show the difference.

@TB, first welcome to CCF. Second, that could be a Cud, which would be a nice mint error. However, it could also be a dollop of clear glue. Try soaking your coin in acetone and seeing if it comes off (obviously, be careful not to scratch your coin).

Oh and one more thing, from what I can tell a lot of nickels I remember seeing had small initials at the bottom of the nickel showing Thomas Jefferson but the nickel above apparent error removed the initials.

Thanks for the welcome. It's not glue. I checked it. Also the link provided doesn't work. Leads to an error.

Please post a picture taken at no angle, front and back. This one gives hints of maybe being MAD.

Welcome to CCF. Great find by the way. It's always great to start out with a real error coin and not a bogus one. Great job! This is a Major Die Break (Also known as a Cud). The die broke do to being in a VLDS (Very Late Die State). This is what caused the error. I'll be looking forward to your new post. :)

Quote:That's one mighty fine "rim Cud" you hsve there! Check http://www.cuds-on-coins.com to see if its listed! Not to hijack your thread but thanks Crazyb0 for that link. I've been out of the hobby for several years and just started back this year. My memory isn't what it used to be but I talked to someone years ago about my Cud coins and sent them pictures. It seems they're listed there and attributed to me. They were: CU-1c-1974-03 CU-1c-1975D-02 It's kinda neat to see them there. I wonder if anyone else ever found ones similar?
