I dropped by my local coin shop and he had a Dansco Shield nickel album partially filled (10 coins). So, I bought two coins that weren't in the album. I hope to take my time to complete the album. (I tend to get eager and fill albums quickly). Some will be fairly easy to obtain and will go quickly, some will take time to get, and some of the varieties I may never get. I already have the 1882 and 1883 noted for possible upgrades. The following picture is from my photo album, and shows the current status. Here is the set so far: Shield Nickels

I don't recall seeing too many pics of a collection of these in an album or otherwise. Good find

Certainly a challenge and not something other kids on the block already have. Good luck on working on the rest.

w/ Mark. Outside of other series key dates those three just about take the cake. I too like the series but due to financial constraints any coin over $250 is out of reach, why this series is on a blank page and no space for those at all, just never happen. Fuzzy, great way to start it, good luck on the rest. Let you know if I see some of your missing in the auctions I frequent.

The Shield nickel is an exciting series that is loaded with repunched dates, doubled-dies, die clashes, broken letters, misplaced date numerals, broken dies, and so on. These varieties are sometimes overlooked by dealers and online sellers. Here is an 1868, reverse of '67 Triple repunched date to whet your appetite:

There is one easy hole left in that page, the 1873 closed 3. The 83/2 is doable, just make sure it IS a 3/2 and not a heavy 2. The proof only issues are probably the next easiest. The 79.80, and 81 are very tough. They can be afforded in low grade but they don't show up very often. The 73 large over small date you can forget about. I think there are currently only five or six pieces known.

I had never considered a Shield nickel (or Liberty V nickel) set until recently. Seems I am not the only one, because many online sites I frequent don't even list Shield nickels for sale or even have an album or folder for them.

Here is an 1867 shattered die in early and late states, with Cuds forming over time. Note the small Cud near the middle of the shield:
