That is a wonderful example of a true mint error called "Partial Collar Strike". The collar wasn't in fully seated position when hammer die struck. Basically it "squirted the lower portion of the coin UNDER the incompletely centered collar. This formed a partial brockage, but the real term is Partial Collar Strike. Save that one, worth some money!

If you don't want it...

BTW, It's a Denver Mint...

That proves that enough hunting does occasionally produce great finds. Congratulations.

This is a true Mint error as Crazyb0 said. A true example of a Partial Collar Strike. Great find and a keeper!

This coin was altered outside the Mint. The obverse was struck by an engraved ring-like die while the reverse rested on a relatively soft surface. You can see a bit of the private die's design at 5:30.

Thanks Mike. I figured it was not the real deal, but always nice to know for sure and how they faked it.

This is one of those images that, when you think about it for a minute, is illogical from a minting standpoint. Good call, mikediamond.
Rest in Peace

For those of you wondering what this coin would have looked like had it been an actual error coin (like I just was), this previous thread may be of some interest:

I was getting excited for you cruzin but, was also wondering what that was at 5:30 on the obverse. Thanks Mike!
