Ok, so I posted this coin for grading in "Cointalk", and I was amazed at the diversity of opinions on this. People differed on nearly 30 points(sheldon scale), and there were several people on both sides of the scale. Part of it is, that the "toning" or whatever visible either turned them off or turned them on. I personally like it, but I still have no clue what this coin would grade. I got a great deal on it, so I'm not worried about a loss here; and I honestly would have paid a lot more for it. Just wanting additional opinions thanks. Image: 1927_25c_0217.jpg37.54 KB

The coin looks AU50 to me.Looks to be slight wear on the center of the shield and the eagles wing tips and tail feathers.Cannot see Miss Liberty's toes either.

I'm no expert on these, but I always thought the place of initial rub was on the thigh and shield on the obverse. Having said that, I fail to see any....On the other hand, other things I see tell me it is in fact circulated. The left hand wing seems worn, but again, I am not really familiar with MS examples of these. The head on the obverse seems to have wear also, but I thought I'd easily see wear on the thigh if the head does in fact show that much wear..... I think TLS is probably close, but I think I'd honestly go higher. Maybe a 55 or 58. I stink at this game, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt.... Very nice coin regardless.

I'm not an expert, & the toning on this coin is dark enough that it's hard to see some of the details. I have to give it an EF. It appears to have a slight flat spot on the breast & above the knee. It might be better than that, it's hard to tell from the pictures.

If the toning in the picture reflects what it's like in hand, I think it's a problem, even if natural. The coin appears very unattractive and as such, it's technical grade will be much higher than its market grade.

As long as you like it, that's all that matters. I'd expect you paid VF - XF money for it, if so you did ok ($25?). If you were to resell it, it'd take someone with similar taste to yours to appreciate the beauty you see in it however the "typical" collector would more than likely prefer a less dark example.

Paid 10 bucks for it on ebay, plus a couple more for shipping. I agree with your assessment Nelrak. Most people were probably turned off by the toning, which explains how I got it so cheap. It was listed as an XF, and people at cointalk graded this coin anywhere from VF to MS-63. Do you think this coin would benefit from an acetone bath?

I don't care for the toning, but would have paid $10 for it. It would probably be worth trying the acetone, even though I don't think it would have much(if any) effect.

yeah, I dont know. The toning gives it some character imo. It's like someone caught a glimpse of the eagle's wing during a night flight via a ground based spotlight.

I'll agree with an EF-40 grade, possibly even EF-45 if there is significant luster remaining. I also agree that the uneven tone will hurt the market value for most collectors. I always look for the beading around the obverse rim on SLQs. If the beading is well-detailed (as it is on your coin) that's a good indicator it is probably in the EF or better range. Excellent buy at $10 plus shipping!

what do you guys think about a FH designation? Or if in the lower grades, was it once a full head? I really like the head compared to others I've seen.

It's definitely not a Full Head at this point. Its almost impossible to say if it ever was, being circulated.

ARGHHHHHHHH! I just received the coin, and it is a different one than the one posted! It doesn't have the dark toning, but its not in as nice of shape either. I'm getting sick of ebay. Its not worth returning, because I will be out shipping handling both ways for a $10 coin.

You should contact the seller RIGHT AWAY and explain your frustration with the purchase. It could have been a oversight on the sellers part or outright deception.Either way I would try to recoupe your losses with the seller. Most sellers would rather not receive a negitive feedback.Especially over a low dollar coin.I have purchased hundreds of coins from ebay and only had one bad experince. (knock on wood)

Yes, I did contact the seller and am awaiting a response. It would be worth sending the coin back, if he would send me the correct one in exchange. If he only offers a refund, i'll just keep it. Not worth shipping to get $10 back.

This was the sellers mistake if it was not the coin listed. You shouldn't have to pay return shipping, the seller should. If it would have been the correct coin and you just didn't like the looks of it in hand, then that would be a different story. His mistake, his loss not yours.
