I could post a picture, but it might be against the rules. I have an 1838 Large cent with the 2nd e altered to be a u. It is clearly contemporaneously done as the entire coin has a heavy patina over all of it. A customer at Redford told be these were bordello tokens. Is that word that old and were they really used like that? He told me it was a common alteration.

He is correct. They are altered cents. I've seen them on the internet. But we are too much of a family orientated place for images like that. So thanks for not posting it.

I moved your post to the appropriate section for the proper attention.

And you are right in not posting the image, cause it would be pulled any.

I just looked on ebay and they sell for like $20. I had it in my junk large cents box for $7 and didn't know what it was. Good thing the kid didn't just buy it from my and put it on ebay!

Yep, see them all the time. Always check the reverse before bidding.

I guess I've lived a sheltered life. Never heard of or saw one until today. Definitely not suitable for family viewing.

I've seen dozens of these naughty coins. Probably done by teenage boys mostly. Kinda like the air hand driers in every gas station bathroom has the directions altered to say something goofy. It wouldn't need to be altered to spend at a bordello. Just someone being naughty for naughtys sake.
Rest in Peace

I remember my LCS showed me one of those without any warning. I laughed and turned red at the same time.

I hope this is okay to post. This is what Numista says about the usage of such "tokens":

Quote:
The procedure was to pay the 'madam' the amount of cash and receive a Token. The 'girl' ... would take the Tokens from the customer and at the end of the evening she would return the tokens to the 'madam'. The token prevented the 'girls' from handling money directly. This coin was used as the Token.

I have one "not sure of the year off hand". I purchased years ago from a dealer for a couple dollars, He stated that they were made into tokens to be redeemed at brothels.
