I was going through some of my wheats because I knew I had a couple good die chips to post and I found this one. Apparently I don't inspect the mm very well this one was cruddy and this is what I get for wiping it off!!

Normally I would think it was MD. But the date doesn't show any evidence of this. So I looked at coppercoins and it is a RPM.

I looked at several examples on PCGS and they didn't have those marks. I wondered if it were a master die issue, but it may just be die damage on the date area. Even the BU examples for this die FS-501 didn't have them on those examples either.

What is behind the 8 is from engraving. It can be found on coins from all three mints . The OP's coin looks to be an early die state and shows the anomaly quite well!
Here is a pic of my rpm #2 which shows the anomaly some but nearly as well.

On the OPs' coin, the anomaly almost looks like a D mint mark?

I definitely see what you are talking about John1 .I compaired the height of the anomaly to what would have been the high points of the mintmark punch and the anomaly looks to be too short to have been made by the punch
