I recently acquired a roll of Mercury dimes. Some of them have gunk on them some green, some brown, but regardless of color they have something on them. Anyone have any tricks for cleaning gunk off of silver coins? I am fine with tarnish, but 5 or 6 of these dimes have much more than tarnish on them.

Thanks in advance.

Soak them in Acetone, then rinse with clean water then blow dry with a hair dryer. No rubbing, no scrubbing. the acetone will remove any organic "stuff" that is on your coins. If the substance is not organic I have no suggestions.
Be careful and follow proper procedures with Acetone, I recommend doing it outside in a well ventilated area.

PURE acetone will not harm the coin. Do not use nail polish remover. Get the acetone at the hardware store and soak them -- one at a time -- in glass jars or dishes. It could take hours, even days, depending upon the amount of crud on the coin.

Search this site for 'cleaning coins' and you'll find a lot of information. The search box is in the upper left corner. (Took me weeks to notice it.)

If green encrustations remain after acetone treatment you can try a soak in white vinegar. This will dissolve copper corrosion products that can form when silver coins (which contain 10% copper) are improperly stored. Rinse well with distilled water after treatment. I would only recommend this process for common coins in circulated grades.
