*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Titles are Important! ***found this nickel in my late fathers coin collection . he loved collecting coins . back in the 70's for years we had an ice cream truck stop by the house and drop off all the loose change to my father . we used to sit around the table and go through them and pick out the silver coins and whatever he found interesting . since he passed most of it has been sold off for the silver by the rest of the family . the other day I was cleaning and found this in a protective sleeve . can anyone tell me does it look like a minting problem or something else and if its worth anything . thanks in advance .

@budmanr, first welcome to CCF. Second, that is an interesting nickel that you have there. Brighter lighting in your pics as well as one showing the rev of the coin would help. It looks to be like there is some heavy circulation wear along the rim at about 11 to 3 o'clock, but that crack at 6 o'clock might have been with this coin at the mint. I'm sure that others will weigh in on this one as well.

I have doubts about this one. The rim should not be flat like that. Note on the cent, the rim is full almost alway around. Probably Mike Diamond should chime in on this one?

Indeed! CWB Hit on the head, but it also has a bit of PMD, damage that all can't be attributed to the defect. The defect will cause the coin to not fill out and imprint correctly because of the less amount of metal to be pushed around. The track marks across Montecello and scratches on the face are damage(post mint. The rubbing around the edge may be the lack of metal to be pushed into the incuse devices on a die (reverse image remember)but also may be rubbed damage. I can see where this could be a fooler tho, pressed, bent, then straightened could have very similar effects. This is a very unusual error coin to find in the raw. Quite a keeper if real and does retain a nice premium value being in AU condition. VERY nice!

the coin was most likely found pretty much right after it was minted . my father always seemed to have a good eye when we went looking through the coins the ice cream man dropped off once or twice a week . I remember him finding defects all the time .the coins we took were kept and the rest went back rolled to the ice cream man along with replacement for how much in coin he took out . he took the defects and put them in paper sleeves with a clear window . then they were put in a loose leaf binder that had sleeves on them .he dad several of these books but they disappeared after he passed . how this one was loose I don't know . found cleaning up the room in a clear plastic box with a few other silver nickels .

Very interesting coin. It has enough scratches on it to make me think it could have been damaged post mint, but then there are spots that look mint state -- like it barely saw any circulation at all.

to the CCF. I'm not an error expert ... but can find no way this coin left the US mint with that condition. We need the true error experts to weigh in ... there are a few here. edited for spelgening

It is, without a doubt, a defective planchet. The alloy was brittle, resulting in the observed cracks and fissures.
