Just received an ebay purchase. The coin is beautiful. Toned Morgan dollar NGC graded MS 66 with a star and a CAC sticker. The problem? The package absolutely reeked of tobacco. All of the enclosed packaging was really bad. The coin was in a small plastic ziplock bag. The bag reeked. Even the NGC holder smells bad. Guess after time the holder will lose the smell. I also collect stamps, and if this was a stamp the smell would probably be transferred to the stamp for a LONG time. Anyone else have this experience?

I collect books; when one shows up like that I am not pleased. Books tend not to lose their smell; but I bet coins will over time!

Yes - You can tell INSTANTLY a purchase came from a smokers house. With the plastic holder - It's supposedly air-tite but the nicotine in the smoke can settle on the plastic - this ain't a free commercial for Zorbx - but spray it with this, wipe it with a soft cloth, and the smell should be gone. http://zorbx.com/

Plain old Windex works just fine. DON'T spray the CAC sticker or the holograms on the reverse.

I would also ask you to show photos so we can see if we can smell it.

I once bought a couple of dansco albums from ebay. They came in a box filled with packing peanuts (didn't know they still existed) and must have been kept in a cigar room/office for years. I still have one of the albums and happily can report the smell eventually went away. I Believe I left them outside to air out in a clean box for a while. I can't remember if I did anything else

Sorry, looking for my lighter. Follow mox's advice. You'll be OK.

When I used to buy more stuff from ebay it seemed like almost every auction billed "smoke-free home". Obviously, for a reason.

I agree--took me over a year to knock down the cigar smell on a book that I bought. Of course, I had been looking for about five years to buy one, so I didn't mind the little extra wait. Now, several years later, I'd say that it is down to about a 2 on the 10-point fumare scale.

I had a really good laugh after I clicked on this post. I wasn't expecting a literally stinking coin! And Dave's picture is priceless.

I'm not sure how the surface cleaners will help as the smoke permeates the plastic and it will outgas over time. Find a dealer that uses NGC a lot and ask him to send your coin in with his for a $10 reholder.
