"1916D-Mintage=264,000 (Very Low) Note: We do not guarantee authenticity of this coin, bidders should assume all risk."

That should be enough said.

They are not willing to gamble with TPG (or they have and already lost), why should you?

Even if real badly cleaned. Mintmark doesn't look right. I would pass on this.

with jbuck - a coin for which the fake to genuine ratio is probably something like 10:1.

This is an issue that unless you're absolutely an expert or have total trust in your dealer's honesty and ability to authenticate, should only be bought reliably certified. The other coins in this instance rather serve as cover for the one you really need to be sure of.

Unless the example is certified by a TPG, I would not purchase it. In this case, there's a 99% chance of it being fake. I'd pass.

Or if you have the common sense, like the OP obviously does, to ask those who would be better versed at knowing fakes without necessarily calling themselves an expert, you start to become the "expert" (whatever that means).

All of the diagnostics to tell a fake from an real one are online and certainly have been discussed somewhere on this forum. And learning about these details can also be enjoyable - after all - you are learning about a coin!

Authentic 1916 D
Thoughts-On-This-1916-D-Dime
Mintmark has a triangular shaped inside cutout and both bottom and top of D are parallel.

Fake 1916 D
Thoughts-On-This-1916-D-Dime
Mintmark cutout is more rectangular and the bottom of the mintmark slopes as to not be parallel to the top.

There is no way with a coin as heavily counterfeited that I
would ever buy one that hasn't been certified by PCGS or NGC.

That coin is a fake. Just look at the reverse lettering. It is all wrong.

One of the most counterfeited coins on Earth. Really have to wonder how many people have fake ones in their collections.
