I think I know the grade on this one (although I'd love to hear your thoughts) but the key question is the observe identification.

What do you think?

Yes, it's an Obv 1a. There's a small premium of that one over an Obv 2.

Given today's "market" grading environment, I think it claws its way into the lower end of the VF range.

Thank you all for your thoughts. I had thought it was more of a F-15 but I'll defer to the wisdom of the group.

Coolest part: I got it for $4 but I bought it because I thought it was obverse 1

Well, I agree with "lucky Cuss" that it's at least F-15 and chance at 20 and I've handles 10's of thousands of Vicky large cents.

I think I'm going to send it to ICCS, as part of a bulk lot... so I'll let you know what they say (in a couple months).

Why are you sending it to ICCS or any TPG ... it's not worth the time or money to cert it. You can pick up one of those any day at a larger coin show for $10-12 and that's what it will cost you to cert it. BTW, there were no Obv 1's for 1886, only Obv 2's and 1a's... no straight Obv 1's.

F-15 tops - save your money, not worth grading cost.

I did end up sending it to ICCS, but only because I had a bulk batch to fill out and I thought it was worth $7 to cert it.

Ended up as a VF:

And ICCS didn't even get the Obverse type correct .. it's a 1a.
