I picked up this 1918 Lincoln Cent on ebay for a few dollars. It caught my eye because it looks to have lamination issues all over the place on both sides.

I'm not sure if this is lamination, or something else, so I thought I'd post it and see what people have to say about it.

I took obverse photos in different lighting to try and get a good look at what's going on.

Thanks!

What makes it even more interesting the striations like that aren't even on a woodie...hmmm?

I'd say it is lamination, seeing peels on and near rim. Its not ED, or PMD, nor caused by acid/caustics, (no layer to affect), heat doesn't have that effect.

I will take a WAG...I say it is caused by electrical current flowing through it. It was a fuse cent, although not seeing the screw marks. A fuse cent was used to "repair" a blown electrical panel fuse before the invent of circuit breakers. Sticking a penny in then messing with in the blown fuse on top fixed it for a while, but no protection and fires would start.

Nice Lamination! Do you plan to purchase it off of ebay?

I like it. Needs a (gentle) acetone cleaning?

I'd try soaking in acetone then see what remains. Might be an old coating of some type of varnish applied to the surface. Thanks, Doug.

I've got it in acetone right now.

If that doesn't do much I may try Verdicare.

More photos to follow if there's any change.

I should've mentioned before. Be gentle like John1 said. After all it seems to be in good condition for a hundred year old coin. Thanks, Doug.

Where it doesn't flow over the tops of the devices, is where the circulation had worn it off those devices.

Here it is after a soak in acetone and treatment with Verdicare.

Sorry about the cat hair on the reverse. It's an occupational hazard when you live in a house with four felines.

I'm going to put this coin on ebay, but thought first I'd see if anyone on CCF might be interested in it.
