Just went through some more of my dad's coins he had left to me- Found this Dime in a "Symbols of Freedom, The Liberty Collection " 5 coin set from 1993 UPM that he had. Surprise!Surprise!- the reverse has a very thick Cud on the top and the toning of the coin is amazing- from gold to rainbow to blue steel from left to right - My pictures do it no justice as far as what the real toning looks like! It seems the dime was also jammed into the slot as its tilted in place, not flush. I'm wondering if it is also broadstruck? Question- more valuable to leave it intact since its already encased and toning very nicely or crack it out and re-seal it, as the other 4 coins are not anything special at all. What way should I go with this?

Just found this on the 1952 Franklin half in the same set Is this a Minute Cud or the rim pushed in- it looks like a "BABY" Cud to me.

Re-looking at this on the Franklin half its on the inside - I think it may be a die chip and not a Cud.?

Quote:Re-looking at this on the Franklin half its on the inside - I think it may be a die chip and not a Cud.? I would tend to agree ... otherwise you'd have to change your name to "CudKing"! Oh, forgot to mention ... a Cud is an edge die chip on steroids!

Since all my Cuds were on the reverse- lets REVERSE your " Cud KING" - to " KING Cud !!"

On the Mercury dime. It does appear to be a Cud. Nice catch. As far as removing it from the case: How is the case sealed? These are after market made, not from the mint (Well as far as I know). Some of these lock together, other ar fastened with screws. So that would be a determining factor. You might want to leave yourself a note (post it Note) on it till you see what the value would be either way. There are some listing in publications for known Cuds. Although yours is not a biggie, all Cuds start from little beginings. So I would leave it in tact till you find more information on it before cracking the set up. It maybe easily removed or have to be cracked. Time is a factor to see what others say about it.

HI COOP!!
Yeah- its not sealed good at all-just locked - I can just snap/ pry it open pretty quick-that may explain why the dime has toned- its not air-tight at all!

A few things...Its not a Cud. It's either folded over metal from a rim ding or it is a drop of solder. These coins were often used to make jewelery. It may be the same on the half. The fact that there might be extra metal along the rim might be why the coin doesn't fit well in the holder. Also, most of the time, coins that were packaged in those sets were basically "culls" and often had rim damage or were cleaned somehow, reducing the value to melt. In any case,I would need to see both sides of the coins, outside of the holder to be sure. I don't think, at this point that they are errors.

Sorry Bill, but I'm dis-agreeing with you right now.
Its not folded over metal and its not solder from what I can see- I'll pull it out of the folder and take new pics for you -Obverse and Reverse and then we all can discuss this further.

I have a broadstruck roos. a lot newer than yours. Looks like a collar problem. Also see some damage to the left of questionable Cud. Is the edge smooth ? I.E.: none or very little reeding ?

Nix that earlier reply on the damage. I was looking at the two last pics. It's just the holder. Interesting coin set. Never saw one before. After closer exam. do not see a broadstrike. the franklin looks kinda ? Weird set of coins. maybe the indian and the nickel are worth something.

I'll wait for pictures of the edge, the obverse and the reverse when the coin is out of the holder to be sure. It just doesn't look right yet.
Thanks, Bill

Hi, I did get more images via email. I won't comment completely unless or until chuckster posts some of the pictures. We are presently emailing back and forth. Without his pictures, the comments won't make sense:-) Still doesn't look like Cuds. There is a possibility that the half may be interesting but for a completely different reason. We'll see where this goes:-) Thanks, Bill
