Hello! I'm new to the forum, and glad I've found this website, I've already learned a lot! I have a question about an odd looking 2002 Louisiana State Quarter that I have and was hoping someone would have some information on why it looks so strange. So here's the backstory on the quarter. I received it about 10 years ago, at there time I received it, it was with a commemorative solid white Louisiana bean/plush bear. My 1yr old son at the time loved holding this bear and after a few days, I figured he had to have this bear so I tore the tag off and placed the attached coin in my coin box where it has sat for years. While going through my coins recently I came across this one and was admiring the beautiful picture on it. I turned it around to where George Washingon is and noticed his face looks like its melting? I've never taken this coin out of the case its in, however it appears moisture has gotten inside? causing discoloration. Is it possible humidity has caused George Washington's face to melt? lol. I know its silly, but I cant find any other coin like this so I'm trying to come up with an explanation. I tried to get a good picture, but its so difficult. 1st picture clearly shows melted head, but because of flash can't really see discoloration. 2nd picture shows discoloration better, but melted head doesn't look as pronounced without as much lighting. And do note its in a clear case which is a bit scratched on the outside. Edited by Peppericca 03/24/2018 1:03 pm

Kind of hard to have a 2015 quarter for the last 10 years? Looks a bit like glue on the coin and I think I see a fingerprint on the face and LIBERTY area west of the bust. I would like a closer view of the STATES of AMERICA area? Not sure what happened to the coin?

thanks for the reply coop! It should have said 2002.. dont know why it said 2015. lol. I have updated it.
I also noticed the fingerprint looking smudge. Thought it may have been made by discoloration from humidity, but may be someone didn't wipe it down before placing it in the case? I've never opened it, amd not sure how to.

See the glue that is holding the case closed? I wonder if that got on the coin before it was sealed? The guy who sealed the capsule may have left his fingerprints on it?

Here is another picture I took, outside with no flash. Tried to get closer of the "States of America" for you @coop. :)

@Peppericca, first welcome to CCF. Second, you last picture is perfect. I agree with @coop that there is clear glue either on the surface of the coin or the holder.

Thanks for all the info! After looking at the obverse side with Louisiana purchase, I found yet again, another fingerprint looking smudge. Which makes me think whoever put the coin in here didnt know what they were doing. Extra glue and prints.. lol.
As for the the double die information, would that also be an explanation as to why there is an extra line coming down and around GW'S jawline? Almost looks like an upside down wishbone.

If that line is incuse, then it is probably damage. If it is raised, it is probably glue. Just can't tell from here what I'm seeing yet. Either way it is not a plus for the coin. sorry

well, mystery solved! After reading your last post, coop, I decided to give another try at opening the case,as I couldn't believe it'd be glue on it.
Unfortunately it is, it's raised glue, although in the case it appears to be incuse rather than raised, but definitely not the case.. which makes me wonder why the heck they would glue the coin to the inside of the case?! Either way, I appreciate the help, as I am still learning.

It was probably put on by a machine. Something went wrong. The employee fixed the issue, got his fingers on the coin and thought; 'No one will see this?' Guess what, we do look that close! LOL
