I got out again yesterday and went to a park in the town next to where I live. At the back of the park is a dirt trail going down a steep hillside. I hunted this area back in 2013 and found a nice 1945 Mercury there.

I'd hit it pretty hard back then and didn't expect to find much, but pulled out five coins in a short time. The hillside is shaded, so most if it was still frozen.

As I worked my way back up it I spotted a coin lying on the ground. I didn't even need to use my detector. I picked it up and was surprised to find myself holding a Buffalo nickel. It's worn and dateless, but only the sixth Buffalo I've found in my six years of metal detecting.

I plan to go back when it warms up and the hillside thaws out more.

Amazing! How in the world did that coin end up on the surface? Must have been frost heaves or something. Anyway, a nice surprise for you!

Wonder if the kids rode sleds down that hill?
Most might be at the bottom.

Simply crazy!

How in the world, did an obviously well worn Buff end up on the surface?

I have found a number of old coin on the surface on steep hillsides. I'd guess that rains wash them out of the ground and sometimes move them down the hill.

When I go back to this spot I'll take a photo to show how steep this particular hill and trail are.
