I got out again yesterday and went to a park in the town next to where I live. At the back of the park is a dirt trail going down a steep hillside. I hunted this area back in 2013 and found a nice 1945 Mercury there.
I'd hit it pretty hard back then and didn't expect to find much, but pulled out five coins in a short time. The hillside is shaded, so most if it was still frozen.
As I worked my way back up it I spotted a coin lying on the ground. I didn't even need to use my detector. I picked it up and was surprised to find myself holding a Buffalo nickel. It's worn and dateless, but only the sixth Buffalo I've found in my six years of metal detecting.
I plan to go back when it warms up and the hillside thaws out more.
I have found a number of old coin on the surface on steep hillsides. I'd guess that rains wash them out of the ground and sometimes move them down the hill.
When I go back to this spot I'll take a photo to show how steep this particular hill and trail are.
