First photo is so bland and just looks wrong w/o the date/mm on the obverse. The edge lettering alone made me NOT collect these. The design isn't bad but I prefer the eagle reverse. Second photo looks much, much better IMO.

It's not like there isn't any room on the obverse for the date/mm. Seems senseless having it on the edge.

Sometimes I think employees just make suggestions/changes b/c they want the boss to think they are actually working and not on Facebook all day at work. I cannot imagine a machine to put edge lettering/dates is all that inexpensive to create either , so how they would justify the seemingly worthless change/cost is something beyond me.

Turn coin on side... ridge has the date. I've a few of each of these newer dollar coins.

I understand it for the presidential series, but I wish they would never had done edge lettering on these.

My thoughts are this... Edge lettering is a total disaster. I loathe it. I like the reverse eagle design a lot, I also like the Statue of Liberty reverse as well. However, I'd rather it say ONE DOLLAR than just $1.

I don't mind edge lettering in general but put use it for the motto and put the date and MM on the faces.

If the edges of the planchets were being lettered before striking it would've made sense because that way you could use the dollar planchets for either type. But since they were being lettered after striking removing the date from the NA dollars was probably done so they wouldn't have to have two different sets of edge dies, one for the NA dollar, and one for the Presidential dollar. If they hadn't restored my the motto In God We Trust to the obverse of the President dollars in 2009, they probably would have removed that the obverse of the NA dollars as well.

It makes no sense including NIFC dollar coins into the annual sets. Uncirculated sets should just be coins intended for circulation. I have a little different take on the halves however.

Quote: Uncirculated sets should just be coins intended for circulation. But they are not, or else they should be more accurately called a circulating strike set (like they offer for the ATB Quarters). The uncirculated mint set coins are not made the same way as circulating business strikes. They are minted with more pressure and at a slower speed.
