I recently found a 1960-D Lincoln Memorial cent that has a circular protruding metal on the reverse. I have done hours o research and cannot figure it out.

I believe it is a lamination flaw or that some foreign metal got in the press when manufacturing the machine, but id like to hear other opinions.

to the forum!

Looks like it has something stuck on it. By the way, it's a Memorial cent, not a wheat back.

looks like glue to me - like it was glued onto something.

It definitely looks like glue. This isn't the first time something like this has shown up, so it certainly can be misleading.

I'm virtually positive that this is glue (the only other possibility is solder or braze). Not a lam or other mint error for sure.

You should be able to soften it up enough to remove it by soaking your cent in water or acetone (depending on what type of glue it is). Know that the toning on this coin will be uneven once the glue is gone as the metal underneath this layer hasn't been exposed to the atmosphere for as long and will typically be less toned.

An acetone soak might prove it's glue and get the glue off.

Personally I wouldn't take the time to do it with that cent. I'd spend it.

If you are trying to see if it really is glue - go ahead and use the results as a great learning experience.
