I have some low grade but not cull ihcs, buffaloes, Barber dimes that I would like to release "into the wild." Have you done this and have you come up with creative ways to do it so that someone might be pleasantly surprised - and maybe become interested in the hobby? Thanks in advance.

I currently take IHCs and Buffalos, nothing fancy to us, but to a 7 or 8 year old out of mama's control at the store these are great attention and ORDER getters! Once Mom realizes you are NOT a pervert....you can see a very grateful lady for a few moments respite. Great conversation starters with the kids and the parents. Stop by my Wallyworld and toss a Barber into the CoinStar tray!

I had some IHC that I included in change when giving the exact change to clerks. This was before darn near everything went electronic but you can still do it. A Coinstart tray is also a good idea.

I leave a coin in every hotel room safe (under the little piece of carpet) that I stay at. When the room doesn't have a safe, I leave a coin in the Bible.

i can't remember the last time I gave or received coins in change when buying something.
i suppose I could give it to whoever, but that takes away the thrill of "finding" something in the wild. I figure that some kid will think the coin is fake and toss it in the trash... :-(

Last week, used a self-checkout at a local retail store, and used some of my dateless Buffalo nickels.

sorry if I didn't quote correctly. this forum seems to be running on ancient technology. It's like I'm back in the 90s. apologies for offending anyone, I'm just joking really. If my grandpa never showed me his silver coins I'd probably think they were fake. I worked at a convenience store during college 5 or 6 years ago and every so often found a silver quarter. sometimes they were in rolls and you could hear that slightly higher pitched chinking noise when dumping a new roll in the register. so I would pick them out. but if no one ever showed me a silver coin I'd just wonder "why does this quarter look so pale and sound weird" and give it out as regular change. I want to buy something with all Mercury dimes. like a 50 cent pack of gum or something and see how the cashier reacts. hopefully they'd make it out into the wild. I dont think they'd stay out too long before going into someones stash. I can never find silver anymore. I tried searching $200 in quarter rolls from the bank and found zero silver. they had to scrounge them up from different cabinets to find enough. this was at wells fargo. I was a little surprised not to find any silver. but oh well. I broke the coinstar machine when I shoveled all the quarters into the thing. that was fun...

Probably a supermarket automatic checkout yourself machine would be best. Pay the exact amount in notes and coins. Machine may reject underweight badly worn coins. That may happen with those old Barber dimes, if they are too thin. Nobody would be bothered in seeing what you are trying to do.

Not coins but at coin shows I ask dealers if they have any coin folders or albums they don't want. I give all the ones I don't want to a grade school near me.

The problem with the automatic machines at the checkout or the coin star machines is that typically they will reject silver coins. Those are good ideas for Indian Head cents or Buffalo nickels though.

Salt them into rolls and bring them to banks. The problem with spending them is that the cashiers will generally just take them for themselves.
