I recently bought rolls of 2018 Kennedy half dollars from the mint. One coin in the D roll was discolored. Looks as if the planchet may have not been polished as the discoloration was on both sides. The coin looks as if it has a matte finish and darker. Has anyone else seen anything like this?
@johnz2, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree that it is pretty hard to tell the coloration and toning from your pics. I will say that we often see darker toning on coins that have had environmental or chemical exposure. Since these coins are 2018s straight from the mint though, that explanation seems less likely.

That is a "sintered" planchet. It is a mint anealling problem. Has to do with too much oxygen in the annealing ovens, causes this metal reaction, is a dulling process, not really the "Black Beauty" Coop is referring to, that is a nickel, and an alloy mix problem(most likely).

It could be a fault rinsing cycle with dirty solution, but I really would think, either one would have more examples than one, especially a rinse.
