A bit of a rant, but also a suggestion to beware of the "fine print" of these sneaky Pete outfits...

I had been wondering why some of my listings would all by themselves mystically change from my preferred way of selling as BIN to a Make Offer. I'd change them back, then shortly they would revert to a Make Offer again. While this may seem "reasonable" their "recommended" low offer is 40% of the asking BIN. I price my items usually with very little wiggle room as is. This knocked my price from half of a new item(one folder) to one quarter, arbitrarily. This is unacceptable and is one more reason I will eventually dump ebay for other sales venues. I have in the past had to answer an offered amount on one item recently for this, I had to tell the customer it was not to have been an Offer, and his offer was not acceptable. BTW, I have had NO, zero, zip, nada activity on this ebay account in 4 months now. The other venues have brought me more in return(profit) and in amount of sales per week than ebay has in almost a year of selling, go figure.

I've only bought 1 coin and sold 0 on ebay in the last year. The one buy was a $3 1856 NGC 58 with virtually no hits or nicks for $900 BIN. Not one I had to think about.

I still get my 100 search results and I'm about to close those down.

2 years without a good buy on a 65 or 66 1934-D Washington? Really? ebay is now trying to compete with Amazon since they've chased away all their small sellers.

Good luck competing with Amazon.

ebay was so very great at its inception. The model they used then is what made them into a giant over a very few years (remember the ebay TV commercials?). Then they incorporated, got greedy, started to limit seller to buyer communication as being only through them (so as not to miss any potential profits - while whitewashing the act as "protection" for the two parties), and ruined the entire system.

I sold a LOT back then. I was able to contact second, third, etc. sellers for duplicate items if I had them and made a lot of sales that way also. I made a lot of money and so did ebay. I hardly use them anymore whereas I used to sell large numbers of new items (mostly glass insulators) every week. I did this for a couple of years and had a lot of fun with ebay as a friend. People using ebay today don't understand what a terrible system it is compared to what it was. ebay originally took less percentage of the profit, understanding the more people feel they personally get ahead, the large ebay would become (and did). Most importantly, ebay gave the seller total control of pricing, accessing contact information, etc.

I especially hate the way they microsoft-mindset-mis-engineer the website all the time by adding more clicks to simple tasks while saying its an improvement.

Rant over.

Unfortunately very true. They want to be Amazon without having any of the overhead themselves.

Honestly most do, but with that said there just aren't any alternatives. There's no legit competition for them which is part of the problem. Heritage, Legend, Stacks, DavidLawrence yes they blow them out of the water at the high end of the market but none of them really want to do deal with coins below say 200 or so dollars. If they do it's because it was part of a larger collection.

Anything at or under 100 ebay is the lowest fees and its not close and if ebay is smart they will keep their advantage there. Until someone makes a real competitor there just isn't another option for a lot of price points unless ebay does something really stupid and really jacks up their fees.

Meshok? Craigslist? That one Chinese site that starts with Ali?

Not that I'm saying that any of those are better than ebay.

None of those even come close to ebay for coins. There may be parts of the world where they do due to outside internet restrictions but overall especially in western countries they would basically be a field mouse to ebay being the 800 pound gorilla when it comes to coins.

J1M, that's apples to oranges. Those are just retailers not a collective of seller. ebay has some that have that business model, unfortunately can't mention the one I use here tho, seems to be a restricted link from years ago...have had no problems so far?

You can cry moan and carry on all you want about ebay , but until something better comes along , you either whine or play on their ball field .
We have been selling on ebay quite successfully since Oct 2000 . Sure ebay has changed over the years and the buyer is almost always right . That said the positives outway the negatives by far.
The negative Nellies almost invariably are not business oriented , have nothing of importance to sell and have a feedback score of less than a hundred .
To be successful in business selling anything , you have to be a positive optimist at all times and never a victim.

This part is actually not true. For buyers yes it would be, but most of the sellers who are the most fed up with the changes or getting scammed are the long time ones and it's mainly the long time ones that stopped.

There's plenty of crazy comments from people that rarely or never use it like when people say it's risky to buy there, but with that said sellers do have a lot of legitimate complaints with the search changes and their push for no questions asked crazy return periods.

Silverwolf, No advance warning on the times before this one email, they just did it, found out when I received an offer. This is first time email received. Funny it comes on the heels of a "change to user po;icy" notice...hmmmm?

NSS52, IDK the answer, is why this is driving me nuts. Only thing I can figure is these two places I just changed hoping that is it?

thanks crazyb0, I think a call to customer service is required, as much as I cringe myself to the thought, of calling, I would be p.o. if someone over took my auctions, and changed my listings, this should never happen with out you giving them the green light.. and I realize you still get to accept, decline or counter an offer, but that should be at your own doing, not at ebay's whim..

From what they've said in the past its for new and occasional sellers that use the quick listing tool. Switch to advanced listing tool and it should go away or sell more I guess. They think it drives sales for smaller sellers.
