Looks like a parking lot coin. Dropped in a parking lot and run over by numerous car tires.

To CCF! It's not an error. It's just a heavily damaged Quarter. It's Post Strike Damage (it happened after it left the U.S. Mint). It's only worth face value.

Thanks confusing part was none of those scratches are visible to the naked eye except on Washington's face. Highly zoomed in. While I got you here, how often do you find errors? I've looked through piles and piles of coins with no luck.

I don't think your going to find a error coin every month ... But you never know. I did pick up a book a couple weeks ago, that has a lot of different error coins to look for. https://www.amazon.com/Strike-Rich-...p/1440249008There are other books, this one is focus on pocket change.

@net161, first welcome to CCF. Second, you have come to the right place to learn about error coins. If you haven't been lurking here, I recommend that you go back through a couple pages worth of the US Modern Error and Variety Coin section (where I will recommend to the mods that this thread be moved; link below). You can very quickly see a whole bunch of coins and then the consensus verdict from our members. In this way, you should start to be able to pick out the error coins from the simply damaged ones. http://goccf.com/f/5

to CCF, Neto. Spence is wise. All the other answers are spot-on too. Out of curiosity, what is the coin resting on in the first pic you posted?

If you deliberately search through a high number of coins (several hundred to thousands weekly), you're likely to find a nominal error or two every 6-8 weeks or so--it all depends on volume and knowing what you're looking for. Significant, high value errors are very rare occurrences. Over many, many years of serious coin roll hunting, my best error find was a MS Quarter 1976-D DDO. After that, I have several RPMs, some good examples of lamination peels, etc.

Hi Neto161 To the CCF. Spence has given good advise on looking through our previous posts on errors. You will probably find that over 90% of what people think are errors are just damage. You can use the sidebar to your advantage also as there is a wealth of information there. To learn various types of errors, go to this website, it has the many types listed with photos. "error-ref.com" One thing to remember, it is only an error if it was done during the striking of the coin, anything done after that (such as your coin) is damage.
