When I awoke this morning, I was surprised to see all the activity on this thread. I was even more surprised to see how the "conversation" degenerated, following my post on the fake 1894-S dime as a comparison piece to the original "1895-O." Then, the thread got locked. I'm glad, for two reasons, to see that it's now unlocked!

1) MeadowViewCollector's post is great! It's what the CCF is all about, educating collectors and dealers, alike. MVC gave us a clear diagnostic indicator to differentiate fakes from the originals.

2) I originally invited the seller of the "1895-O" to join the conversation, and he did so, in a fine, up-front way. I can only hope that he will not be discouraged from further participation in the CCF. I do look forward to seeing what more he has to say about the "1895-O" which I thought bore similarity to my fake "1894-S."

BTW ....

Hello to everyone on this thread. I am the seller of this coin. I run a small antique shop and dabble in coins. I am, by no means, an expert. I have been an active seller at ebay for 20 years, with integrity and perfect feedback. I never intend to misrepresent an item or mislead a buyer. I have an appointment with a coin expert tomorrow, and will have this coin verified before ever proceeding with the sale. I'll let you all know what that expert says and have a discussion about it with the buyer before we move forward. I appreciate the forum user who contacted me to let me know there were questions about the validity of this coin. Rest assured, we have never and will never intentionally sell fake or counterfeit items.

to the CCF, Redshed !

I've had guys like @NumismaticExpert working for me over the years that I've fired. I person with outstanding knowledge, a Subject Matter Expert (SME), that hoarded knowledge, wouldn't share it and rubs it in his coworkers faces! These type of employees are problem employees, disrupting the workforce and moral. Which is grounds for firing or a reassignment. @NumismaticExpert kinds of people were never team-players, always late to meetings, late to work and not dependable or reliable. They thought their knowledge, education or credentials would save them........wrong! I'd take the young kid that wants to learn, wants to be there, has a good attitude, arrives early and stays late any day of the week!

And a thank you to Bobby and the moderators for keeping this the most civil forum of any kind on the internet. I've looked at other coin, aquarium and pond forums (my other hobbies / business) and have always left in disgust at the rudeness, sniping and oneupsmanship that goes on.
Not here though. Or not for long.

Quite an exchange to wake up to! One is tempted to pile on, but what's the sense. Most everyone here has exhibited, as usual, a remarkable degree of civility.

People will respect you for being knowledgable and humble, not for your arrogance...

Back to the original topic - this has been a good thread to read, as counterfeiters become ever more sophisticated. For me, it was the date that didn't look right, especially the 8 and 9... but MeadowviewCollector's posts are exactly what this hobby needs to keep a step ahead of the counterfeiting... The hardest thing is that there are a ton of "experts" here who have similar knowledge for their own particular series, but so very few of them ever decide to stick their necks out and write it up for future generations of collectors.

The question I pose to MeadowviewCollector is:

Has this information been published somewhere as a means to help identify counterfeiting? If not, then you sound like the perfect person to write that up!!

Well after a good read, I learned a little something about these counterfeits (I collect FE counterfeits when I find them).
But most importantly:
Coinfrog - make one more post! 29,999!

This thread reminds me, alas, of how rudimentary my understanding is of sophisticated counterfeiting techniques, despite collecting for nearly 60 years. Love you guys.

Thankful that the most recent, profanity filled reply, was deleted by our tremendous mod-dudes.

I accept this thread as vivid evidence that occasional disruptive members might come along - we cannot control that ...

What we do control is our reaction to them and our collective ability to uphold the educational, family friendly forum we all enjoy.

Adios numismaticexpert - go hang out somewhere else as your disruptive and contentious approach is not condoned here.

Take a look at my other hobby ... http://www.jk-dk.art
