Hello again I have a 1974 d nickel that has cracks like paint chips falling off on the inner rim. Botton of Jefferson, above his head, and "we trust". Dont know if its age or a bad mixture of the coins content

Hmmpf. That's a good one. Have to wait for the pros to chime in.

My first thought was something similar to a Rim Fin but I'm talking out of my you know what.

Badly deteriorated die. The letters are pushing right into the rim.

Can't see it from here, but it maybe a Dryer Coin? That rolls the edge over the rim.

I am wondering if this is Peripheral Die Damage? (a form of Die Deterioration) It looks similar to this reference.
