This has been packed away in some of my stuff for at least 40 years. Thought I would share it with you.....

Back in the 1970's you could buy these small tobacco sacks from the mint that contained a few cents along with a informational leaflet describing the contents. Evidently they were available in the gift shops but were also sold by mail as that's where mine came from. This one contains twenty 1971-D cents and I'm pretty sure it cost less than a dollar. If I remember correctly, this project was partnered with The Workshop for the Blind.

Enjoy!

I still have mine from 1972. This was probably the first mint purchase I ever made, at age 10.

MJD...

I noticed yours has "P-D-S" stamped on the bag along with "15 Cents". Does it contain 5 coins from each mint?

Mine contains 20 coins...all D mints.

Thx for posting pics of yours!

On the subject of cents and tobacco, I remember when cigarettes from a vending machine had two or three as change on the side of the pack (they were $0.77 per pack). There I go showing my age again.

Westernsky,

You are correct — my 1972 bag has five coins from each mint. Only 14 are left, I think one of the S mint coins ended up in a long forgotten Whitman folder!

Looks like MJD's set has a little more browning going on than WesternSky's but both are very interesting for the perspective on the mint products back then.

Did you both get them at the Denver Mint?
