What is going on by the top and middle of the 3?

Could it have been struck in some type of debris? Looks like it extended over the the 4 as well.

Certainly looks odd, but my money is one a well-placed hit that partly flattened the top of the number 3. I'm interested to see what others think on this one.

Looks more like coin damage. If it were MD the other digits would also be affected.
