This uncertified 1916 Standing Liberty quarter sold for $4,600 on ebay today. I came across it just a few minutes before it ended. The seller's photos are not overly clear, but I have some questions about the authenticity of this coin. I am certainly no expert, and may be wrong about it, but am trying to learn to authenticate coins and have looked at the diagnostics of an authentic 1916. I have several questions about this piece. The "6" in the date looks strangely shaped. The drapery on the right arm seems to hand lower than it should on a 1916. The shield looks much better struck than you would expect on a 1916 with this amount of wear. The photos aren't clear enough for me to be able to make an assessment on the hair. I would appreciate the thoughts and comments from other CCF members on this coin. Thanks. Here is the link to the auction: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-19...xUJ7PFk%253D Paul Bulgerin

The pictures are pretty bad but all of the diagnostics I know to look for makes it seem like a 1917 that's been altered and not a genuine 1916.
Can't imagine why anyone would bid thousands on an uncertified rarity with bad pictures!

Looks counterfeit/altered to me. Date doesn't look right at all. Surfaces appear to be very porous.
The purchaser is going to be in for a rude awakening when either one of these two things happen: 1) he tries to sell it to a knowledgeable collector or dealer; or 2) he sends it off for 3rd party grading.

It looks like it was previously sold for $4550 in August. He has a return policy so I am thinking the original purchaser sent it back or it is a shill bidder. If not shill bidding then WOW! 2 different auctions fooled that many bidders!

No sane and serious collector of a $thousand dollar plus U.S. coin would buy a raw 1916 SLQ in any condition, on ebay. Such a coin would need to independently verified by a professional before making a decision to bid.

Amazing that people would put out that kind of money and not know what they are buying.

That really doesn't look right. It's doesn't match any of the diagnostics I would use. I hope the buyer catches the problems before they lose that much money. I wouldn't spend a $46 dollars, let alone $4600 on a coin that looked like that without some sort of certification or 100% money back promise WHEN it proves to be an altered or forged coin. I tried to look at the ebay listing but the link above doesn't lead anywhere. Has the listing been removed?
ANA ID: 3203813 - CONECA ID: N-5637 Clean a coin that may be worth collecting? Please DON'T! When in doubt, leave it dirty!!
