I don't think that is it because I think you would see more wear on Lincoln (hair and face would be more flat?) and more wear on the rim and probably on wheat grains (wouldn't be any visible?) Try putting two boards together with a damaged Wheat cent and squeeze it together to see how the devices look. That thought came to me as to the cause of this type of damage on a coin.
