A pet peeve of mine. Aside from getting grease and oils on the item, it is surely more stable to put the coin on a flat surface and steady the camera either with 2 hands or on a flat surface as well.

I've often wondered this as well. From the people who are newbies and don't know any better, than OK I will give them a pass. However, I see this from some people on ebay who have sold 1000's of coins, which makes me scratch my head.

If it's a circulated coin it doesn't really matter much but it is a bit strange given how bad the aesthetics of those pictures look

Besides the sellers who don't know any better, there are plenty of buyers who don't know the proper way to handle coins either so people like us on here get queasy about it, while others out there don't give it a thought. But I do agree, for most circulated coins it makes some but little difference.

What kills me is when a coin dealer will handle coins improperly or plop them on the counter.
For some medals, it does give me an approximate idea of how big the medal might be, when I can see the size of a hand underneath.

It's okay. Look at these photos of me using gloves to hold coins for edge shots and try to relax.

FBI could even figure out whodunit

Though the guy has likely been dead 50 or 100 years.

OUCH! That fingerprint really hurts!

I opened a mint sealed bag of 1974-D LMC once and found 2 or 3 large purple fingerprints on otherwise full red coins. If the mint kept a fingerprint file on mint employees in the seventies they should be able to tell me who was working with that bag.

It may well be that many millions of people just really don't know about fingerprints. They have never been told about oils and acids on your skin. Oddly enough even many dealers and collectors too don't realize this. I've seen those so called experts on TV handle coins with their bare hands all the time.
Either people don't know or just don't care.

It is a pet peeve of mine too. Here are a few examples of ebay listings showing hands I've seen in the past.

It is a bit of a peeve of mine as well. It tends to turn me off from even buying the coin. I agree that it ruins the aesthetics. It also shows some laziness on the part of the seller. Can't they take the time to think about how that picture is going to look to the buyer when its posted. I know I have some specific backdrops that I like to use (a lighter colored wood table, a darker colored wood table and a black leather-bound book) and some different lighting options. I think about what back ground would make the coin look better. After all, the coin is the star of the show. (rant over)
