Poll Question
I got out all my spare change over the years, split everything up into plastic baggies, and put the dimes and quarters together because I hear all dimes/quarters before 1964 are 90% silver. (pls correct me if I'm wrong)

But is it really worth it? Or should I just cash it in.

So far most of the coins Ive been posting that I thought were rare or atleast worth a decent amount of money, are actually trash lol.

So I'm giving up going though those coins for now.

How rare is that I'm actually gonna find a good amount of 1964 or lower dimes/quarters in all these?

Both those bags in the picture are also filled with dimes/quarters, theres more coins in just 1 of those bags then the ones on the table.

Silver is still silver. I check all my change for silver. Although it's getting rarer and rarer but just about a month ago I got a silver dime in change.

If your going to roll them and take them to the bank. Take a quick look. It will only take less than a half a minute.

I don't think you will find a lot of silver but I'd still go through them. You will probably find a few and that alone is worth taking the time to look.

You won't find much silver at all. But the effort to look through it is minimal so any silver you find is worth it.

Line the edges of the coins in your palm so all you see is the edges. If there is any silver in the pile it will "jump" out at you.

Good luck!

1. Hopefully you have now learned the lesson to look at them BEFORE you put them in bags or jars.

2. In my experience, the incidence of silver dimes and quarters in pocket change is well under 1 in 1,000, and probably under 1 in 10,000 or even lower. I have not found one in over a decade.
However, in my experience the chance of finding a War Nickel is far higher. I find one or two a year.

Read a book instead. Much better value.

Is it worth it?
if you got time to post and look at pics of coins...you could be just looking at coins
besides, your pic doesn't show a lot of coins by my standard, an evenings worth of viewing lol

if you don't search them for silver you might inadvertently pass along any potential silver (not to mention possible error coins) to someone else. I never let large accumulations of dimes or quarters loose before checking them for silver. it doesn't take long to do. what you want to avoid is this feeling:

and even if you find none.. well, at least you checked. that's part of the thrill of the hunt (for collectors). I jump at the chance to sift thru any amounts of accumulated change.

..but don't narrow your focus on just silver, HCN.. there is a lot of stuff you can find. DDO / DDR quarters & dimes are being found by ccf members all the time, as evidenced by the many pix that get posted here. I like looking for the many DD quarter varieties. plus there are now the W quarters to be on the lookout for.

it's been about 4 years since I last pulled a silver quarter from circulation, I tend to find silver dimes more often.

the persistent, tedious, tenacious collector examines everything, no matter what. you just never know what you'll find from day to day.

don't be discouraged if the oldest & most beat-up things you find aren't worth much; most of the stuff you search is going to be common, spendable stuff. most of the rest of us go thru the same thing.

above all else: have fun! the thrill of the hunt lasts and lasts, but eventually you'll find something that'll give you a jolt and make all the searching worth it.

this site is one of the best resources you can have at your disposal. between conversing with all the longtime collectors & rookies here, plus all the reading material, you're practically enrolled in a coin college.

cheers! and good luck to you! we look forward to seeing what you're able to find!

Hey, I just wanna say, your an awesome dude mrpink, thanks for telling me all.

I just got done with looking at all those dimes and quarts, and there was no silvers ones at all. It honest felt like someone kicked me in the gut after I got done looking. Just because I got a rush while looking for them, just hoping to find one. JUST ONE!

I don't really expect to get rich off my coins that I brought up from storage/got as gifts.

But I honestly was just about ready to give up, and just put all the coins I got back in storage. or cash them in and give those crap ones I thought were rare to a pawn shop and let them give me whatever cash they want for them.

I can see now why people become coin collectors, its kind of a rush searching up my coins and looking though all them.

and I bet when you finally find or get the coin you wanted so bad, I bet you feel awesome lol.

But thanks for your message mrpink. you probably just saved me from making a huge mistake. lol

and thanks keith for the info on how to look at the sides, that saved alot of time.

oh and thanks to all you WHO PICKED "STOP BEING LAZY AND JUST DO IT"!! YA JERKS!! lol j/k j/k

Well I'm the lone wolf that picked '' No , don't do it it's not worth it ''. I took a good look at the change you laid out , Did not see any silver , They would have stuck out like a sore thumb next to the clad crap . regardless of how you cash them in just take a couple of seconds and like Keith12 says look at the edges of the coins Silver is silver and clad is copperish .
