Hi all, I stumbled across this 1962 LMC over the weekend in my change. Actually, I just spotted it out of the corner of my eye and I thought,"cool, a proof dime." The reason I thought this is that the coin is silver-ish in color (I know it doesn't show up the best in the pics). It also looks very much like a proof (not a cameo, but just a regular proof). But, when I took a closer look .... wait a minute, that's a Lincoln Cent. The color is what is throwing me. There are a couple spot were you can see some remnant of copper color. But, you have to look really close. My first thought was could someone have cleaned it some how to look like that? I've never seen that kind of color on a cent. Anyway, I wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts. Sorry again for the pics.

I once got back a 1972 LMC in change that I swore was the fabled aluminum cent. But the aluminum cent only came out in 1974. My "silver" cent looked like yours, had a little wear and was not copper colored. Really looked like aluminum foil. I assumed it was treated with some chemical so I spent it. Funniest thing was that the cashier I gave it to out must have thought it was a dime. As I was given back a dime more in change. So mine was worth 10 cents , but I believe I got it as a dime replacement so I didn't lose. If this was now I would have done more research on it.

John 1: My son suggested we weigh it ..... came in a 3.1 grams. Haven't checked magnetism yet.
hfjacinto: I seriously thought I had a proof dime until I took a closer look. It was what caught my eye in the pile of change.

Possibly plated years ago--now beginning to wear off a bit?

It's mercury coated. We us to do this to pennies 50 years ago. Now they say it's not the thing to do, but I have no ill effects from it I have no ill effects from it

I would also think it is plated.

Or possibly someone made a machine that makes proof cents and made the one you have. Or it is a coin from the future where all coins look like that. Also, a bit of auto wax polish could do that.
