I was curious to know what you guys would use 3D printing for regarding numismatics.

My family owns a printing company (shirts, hats, pants, cups, cards, books ect) but I decided to venture off into the 3D printing when it first came out as I have a lot of fun in CAD software.

I've printed many things like small plastic boat motor parts, fishing lures, RC car parts for when my kids manage to break them ect, I also have something in the works that is numismatic related that I think a lot of people will enjoy.

My question is, if you had a 3D printer at your disposal what would you make? anything from Camera Mounts, to coin holders, maybe microscope mounts that seem to break on those cheap USB microscopes.

All opinions appreciated.

Cheers!

I don't have a clue how they work but if it were easy enough to make custom "safe for coins" holders like Capital Plastics makes, I'd go crazy with it.

@jw007, how about some sort of adaptive technology that allows folks with a hand tremor to still use their phone to take good pics of coins (part camera stand and part selfie stick so that the shutter can be tapped remotely)? I am particularly thinking about helping out our own @thrifty_nickel:

The process for 3D Printing is fairly straight forward, the cases themselves however look to be molded from clear acrylic and 3D printing you can mainly only print solid colors, However 3D Printing the inserts for the case is easy, I have accumulated a nice variety of Canadian doubled die small cents that I plan to make a case for, the outside will be molded plastic, while the insert that the coins sit in and stay snug will be 3D Printed.

So generally if you have empty plastic cases laying around with no inserts you could 3D Print the insert for any coin variation you wanted, example Cent-Dime-Nickel-Quarter-Half or an insert for a collection of just halves.

@Spence, its funny you mention that as this relates to what I already have in the works, I have come to realize that taking photos of coins with a phone if done properly can help a lot without the need of high tech microscopes or cameras, but anyone that has tried has faced the issue of not getting a good enough picture due to many things like unsteady hands, even when you press the button your phone will move even the slightest and mess up an otherwise good photo.

I will reach out to @thrifty_nickel and see if I can be of some assistance, I read his post and I think this is something he may benefit from and I would be happy to help out.

There could be a market for very large reproductions of famous coins, in a range of different materials.
Would need good marketing expertise.

No use making numismatic fakes, especially of ancient coins, even in the correct metal, because:
1. The method of manufacture would leave telltale signs of how they were made.
2. XRF analysis, looking for trace metals and impurities, would betray them. The ancients could not refine gold or silver much above about 95% pure.

Thought about this. Something I would find useful would be a tool that makes opening the coin capsules easier. I've been working on my Modern Commemorative Silver Dollar Albums and something more effective than my pocket knife would be cool.

I think I understand now. You need something 3D to be "copied" then printed simultaneously. So making a holder with wood, then getting two pieces of clear acyclic for outer covers and then (carefully) drilling all three pieces through together for screws would work. Thanks!

I was not aware of @thrifty_nickel having problems, I must have missed those posts but. What about something like a Weathertech cup phone holder?

you guys do know that you can turn on "voice commands" on your phone and literally say "cheese" or "snapshot" and it will activate the phone shutter remotely right?

First thing I'd do with a 3D printer is make a heavy duty gear for my 67 Imperial gear box for the cruse control.
As for Numismatics, I'd make all sorts of Mercury dimes for place cards and other stuff.

I have a rendition of a medal that was planned to be awarded to dignitaries at the 1960 Paris Summit. The medals were actually struck by the U.S. Mint, but later returned to the U.S. Treasury for destruction after the Paris Summit collapsed. I am willing to pay to get these renditions made into a larger version of the medal for a future medal exhibit. Right now my rendition is 2D on paper. Somehow the word COPY must be placed on the 3D version. You can see the Class 3 medal obverse rendition at https://potus-sgm.com/ . The reverse rendition is not shown at the website.
