I keep hoping for a favorable update too, but I doubt now at three years in we will get one. I would say this should have been solved one way or another by now no?

Believe it or not, but Time is exactly what this needs right now. Just give it a... little... more... time

As had been mentioned here a few times before, if it was fake we (or at least larsjan) would have probably known by now, but if it's real it would require tons of research to confirm, so things are progressing slowly (of course Covid didn't help).
In other words, in this particular case, no news is good news, because if there were bad news they'd have probably been posted a long time ago.

Another year gone by and one final bump. I guess we'll never find out what happened with this coin.

Well, for What It's Worth: I know someone who went to work for a firm which you would expect would have the item in question (the person has since departed employ there). I asked the person point-blank about Something-and the person knew exactly what I was talking about. This person has the chops to start the Yea process, if warranted. "It's in Massachusetts*; that's all I can say about it" was what I heard. So, the item in question was being studied, and that was a year ago. *(I know exactly where it was, and yeah, if it had steam we would have known)

Without a well defined provenance it's going to be hard for anyone to commit fully to a judgement of authentic. I think it still has considerable value though as it also can't be called a for sure forgery. I don't know, I sorta like the story and intrigue behind the piece regardless.

Quote: a firm which you would expect would have the item in question @Oldgrouchyguy, it is known from this thread (page 16) that the coin was in the US and in the possession of Stack's since at least 04/16/21 - "being studied" status is going on three years now. If the "firm" you allude to is not Stack's, then the implication is that it changed hands privately and went dark, perhaps forever. If it was deemed counterfeit, I don't know why somebody couldn't just come out and say so. I don't know why all the secrecy. Maybe the guy who has the stolen Yale example wanted another one.

I can't say who it is or isn't, but I stuck my nose in and the person knew exactly to what I was referring. What the person told me I can't repeat except to say that the item WAS being closely studied, and that it was "interesting". I asked that if there would be something to report and the person cut me off with a Yes, let's say that the person had a "on my desk" relationship with the item, and he knows all about this thread.

At this point I'm not optimistic but will continue to hope for the best.

No person's name, no company name. Sounds like just rumors that are not supported by anything. I think that the author of the topic may never appear online again, but I really hope that we will see news about a super auction at which this coin will be presented or news from the appraiser's company. If the information about the "silent" deal turns out to be correct, then this is further proof that money is not always enough, connections are also needed. I can't believe that someone pulled off a "silent" deal.

Slerk: I'm puzzled about "the Deal" thing, but I can assure you that nothing nefarious is associated with the vetting process. I cannot break a Confidence (and it the person wants to ID on here, the person can do that), but I do know that it was in Boston as late as last year, and it was being studied "in-hand". Whether or not the OP wants to chime in now and add to this, he is surely most welcome to do so. For myself, after a year of knowing and not saying because I couldn't-those circumstances have changed a bit so releasing this info doesn't hurt the person I know, and to let everyone here know that the item in 2023 was in the hands of an Expert In The Field, and if there were anything else to know about it, that info would have been released.

I'm sorry I reopened this. It's nothing but old news or the same old news in a new wrapper. As I said above, we've known it was in an expert's hand, in the US, for three years. There's nothing so confidential about that. They were attempting to compare it in person with the MHS example _two years_ ago. All this cloak and dagger about who had it a year ago and what firm it was - I mean, honestly, who cares. If nobody wants to stick their neck out and call it genuine, then call it a counterfeit or never knowable and let's move on. I don't understand why @larsjan would wait around for four years to get that answer. I would have unloaded it as-is or demanded the coin back a long time ago.

As we all know by now, Certification is a must for items such as this one. If it can't be Certified, it can't be sold with a Guarantee. So, what are your options? I don't blame OP for playing the Waiting Game, because the pay-off would be umpteen times better with it in one of those plastic holders...
