Hello, I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of a 1913 S Type 2 Buffalo nickel. This will complete my collection of circulated Buffs....except for the 1918/7 D and 37 D 3 legged. Unfortunately , my Dansco has two very BIG holes calling for those particular coins. Do you think these varieties are required to have a "complete" set? Edited by johnny676767 04/04/2020 2:30 pm

I put in 2005 Proof Bison nickels into those holes. So to me the answer is no.

Looks good your way, clever hole filler.

As the owner you get to define what you consider what is a complete set.
For me, a complete set does NOT include proofs. And it does NOT include Mint errors. Make a decision then stick to it. Don't let something like this eat at you.
So get your 1913-S T2 and then either look into upgrades or start a new series.

I would consider your collection "complete" without those two coins. There are so many varieties in almost any series that what one "must" include (e.g. the two coins you mention) seems arbitrary to me at best.

Oh no— this is the coin!! I am afraid to open it. I posted in the main forum looking for suggestions! What to do now?

Open it and see whats up. May not be more than surface damage.

Link to "what to do about damage" thread: (Coin is fine) http://goccf.com/t/371167Sorry, didn't mean to highjack my own thread but I was a bit panicked/shocked. I like hfjacinto's idea. I don't think I would buy those 2 varieties raw, nor would I crack them out. So, I don't see those holes being filled either way.

Yours is an age old question and problem. To many of us allow Album and Folder manufacturers to dictate to us what is a complete set. It is not only Dansco, but Whitman, Littleton, etc. They all do it. I hate Dansco even more since they have so many just blank holes at the end of many of their products. At least with Whitman, all slots are accounted for. So many of these companies have places for things like the 1922 Plain cent, 18D/17 Nickel and I've even seen an Album with a place for the 1894S Dime, although rare but possible. The put those slots in their products without any thoughts as to the actual chances of people filling that place. I've always wondered if enough people would write letters to them complaining about this, would it matter?

Maybe you should put some Chinese copies in those holes?

just carl has expressed my feelings perfectly. For me a "SET" consists of regularly issued coins, not errors. A case can me made to put the 1918-D 18/17 into the 'regular' 1918-D slot! Two of the extra holes in my Dansco Barber dime album now house a 1905 Micro "O" and a 1914-D re-punched mintmark. Every collector faces the dilemma that you face, johnny676767, and each collector must come to his or her own solution. (The Proof Bison nickels are a perfect solution!)

That must be why I have no albums. My 1939-1941 uncirculated coins are in their graded slabs. My uncirculated sets 1942 through 1958 are in capital plastic two or three row holders. Anything newer than that are in the original mint set holders from the mint.

I've owned a PCGS VG10 example of this coin. Do you need it to complete set? In my opinion no but the cool factor of one of the clearest overdate coins out there, makes it a must IMHO. I would go VG or higher.

Being a variety, I don't consider it a part of a complete set. Maybe you could get one at a later time. Both the 1918/7 and the 1937-D 3 leg are really cool to look at.
